ARP Solus

ARP Solus Image

The ARP Solus is a light and portable synth that lies somewhere between the Axxe and the Odyssey. The Solus is monophonic with 2 oscillators that include pulse-width-modulation and a digital ring modulator. An FM slider allows for an external sound source to be ring modulated through VCO #1 which gives this synth added function as an analog ring modulator perfect for creating wacky sounds. A great sounding ARP VCF (filter) adds a nice touch. Pitch bending is accomplished using a simple knob. Designed for portability this synth comes packaged in a very nicely built road case. It has been used by Tangerine Dream.

One more thing: the Solus and Odyssey are two of the best keyboards for playing a MODULAR. Not only does it add a trigger to the usual CV/Gate outputs, it also has inputs for all 3. But the real ace is that the CV is summed from the keyboard+vibrato/LFO+portamento. Most analog synths don't do this and is a pita to setup on most MIDI-CV convertors. It works beautifully here - ready to go w/ Eurorack or other 1/8" jack-system, but I've also used it with my (banana jack) modcan a system and serge modulars just as well.

What a great little synth. No it is not the bass demon a moog or pro-one is, but this 'sings' better than the P1 imho and in some ways i much prefer Arp oscillator to most moogs. Solus is not so fussy or fragile as a pro-soloist and is capable of a deeper complex sound vs the prosolist & axxe. truly, if you can live without PPC, AR + S&H/noise this has got the rest of the odyssey inside for under half the going rate. These being newer and further along R&D are a bit more reliable than most ARPs, too! I have a grayface 2600 also, and combining these two is insanely cool sounding.

The ARP Solus was used on The Cars 4th album "Shake It Up". Greg Hawkes used the ARP Solus for synth bass on the song "Think It Over" according to an interview that can be found at http://dailyeventsbookpagethree.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html. (However, it was mis-spelled ARP Solace in the interview.)

Also, The Cars bassist Ben Orr (RIP) can be seen playing this bass part on an ARP Solus during a 1981 performance of "Think It Over" on the ABC late night show "Fridays".
