Apple officially supports wireless gamepads since iOS 13, but some developers have gone beyond simply using this feature for games. Luis Fernando García Pérez went and created an app called MIDITROL that can turn any compatible controller into a MIDI/OSC controller. It has ultra-low latency and makes for an entertaining way to interact with your analog and digital instruments.

Luis designed MIDITROL to be a powerful, expressive, and fast MIDI controller for musicians in search of new ways to interact with their art. It allows you to control up to 10 analog sensors in real-time with access to 120 MIDI CC values. You also have access to all MIDI notes in layers of 12 low latency digital buttons.

Check out the video below for an example of the MIDITROL being used to control multiple parameters of a Moog Minitaur, Arturia Microbrute, and a Synthstrom Deluge at the same time using a wireless Xbox One gamepad. The left trigger on the gamepad is used for controlling the Minitaur filter frequency while the right trigger is modulating the VCO2 frequency. The LPF frequency and filter resonance of the Deluge is controlled by the right joystick while the digital buttons of the gamepad trigger notes on the Minitaur.

While MIDITROL is obviously not a serious replacement for a proper MIDI controller it does open up some interesting possibilities for playing around with your gear. The app is currently available for download on the App Store (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/miditrol/id1504524252) while the Android version will be available soon. Those interested in MIDITROL can also head over to the official website (https://miditrol.com/) to subscribe to a mailing list for important updates and new features of the software.
