Artist Profile: BT

BT
BT is a musical genius who in just a few short years has already amassed an impressive list of credits and accolades. BT is Brian Transeau, an American classically trained multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer who has been playing the piano since he was 2 years old! He debuted in 1995 with his epic release of IMA and has been redefining the sound of electronic music with his unique and talented style!

Believer - This is a great track BT created for the movie "Go". BT is famous for his stuttering vocal effect and you can hear some of that here!

Aside from three released albums, BT has worked with and remixed several now famous and memorable tracks! He worked with Tori Amos on "Blue Skies". He teamed up with Taylor for Libra Presents: Taylor which produced the memorable "Anomaly: Calling Your Name". And he has remixed and collaborated with DJ Sasha, Paul van Dyk, Seal, Mike Oldfield, Madonna and Depeche Mode. BT is credited with defining the genre of Trance. He has also successfully ventured into the area of movie soundtracks producing and scoring with films like Go, The Fast and the Furious, and Zoolander. And his latest album "Movement In Still Life" was a major success in the UK and America.

It's No Good (BT Trance Vocal Mix) - This is one of three BT remixes of this song from the newly released Depeche Mode, Remixes From The Heart single, 1999.

The music of BT could be considered Epic Dream House, Rave, Trance or break-beat. Whatever you want to call it, there is a definite sense of musical ingenuity, style and redefinition not heard in a lot of other similar music. His music is crafted with technical precision and imaginative sounds such that his songs are quite organic and still very musical. It's known that BT constantly uses an ARP 2600 (at least its filters). He also uses an Ensoniq ASRx, Roland JV-1000, Yamaha DX-7, JP-8000, possibly a FutureRetro 777 and many more electronic (and acoustic) instruments. But BT's most useful tool in the studio is Digidesign Pro Tools.

"[The JP-8000], it's the coolest thing that Roland has ever made, in my opinion."**

"90 percent of the time, what I do is generated with human hands... It is of organic origins and I use electronics to manipulate human performances as opposed to generating stuff with electronics. I've got an ARP 2600 and I swear I've used the internal oscillator in that on maybe one record, but I use it on every track. I run everything through that thing. I use these tools to mangle and manipulate sounds rather than to generate it." *

It's true. BT will perform and record little samples of sounds and then process them over and over, through multiple treatments, meticulously creating textures and rhythms which he'll then incorporate into his music. BT isn't just a great composer of electronic music, but an excellent and pioneering programmer as well. Get set to watch BT re-invent music over the next several years!

"I've got the Jupiter-4, -6, and -8, but the Jupiter-4 is my favorite... The SH-09 is one of my favorite things for bass."**
