Moby has been around forever now it seems. Throughout the nineties Moby has dabbled in all sorts of styles like punk rock, house, techno, ambient, soundtracks and scores and now..electro-blues! The man behind Moby is Richard Hall, and his latest release Play marks his eighth release and its his most successful commercial chart-topping album yet.
Porcelain - Here it is, the popular and commercially successful song from the movie, "The Beach" and various TV commercials. From the album Play, 1999.
Though Moby seems to switch from one musical style to another with each new album he never seems to spread himself too thin. He's got a classic song from each style he has produced music in. From the techno-y "Go" to the "Natural Blues" of his current album. Thematic piano and strings music such as "God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters" and classic remixes of famous tracks by Orbital, LFO, the B-52's, Blur, David Bowie, Depeche Mode and even the James Bond Theme for "Tomorrow Never Dies". His unique sounds, style and flare clearly identify his music as Moby, whatever his current style, mood or flavor is!
Oil 1 - This is a classic Moby house track used in the movie The Saint. From the album I Like To Score, 1997.
Moby typically writes, programs, performs, records and mixes his music all by himself. In his music, Moby relies heavily upon his Yamaha SY-22 for his 'signature' string sound which can be heard throughout most of his work! Moby also relies heavily upon sampling for creating his own beats, grooves and loops and seems to prefer the older 'Vintage' Akai S950. Moby says "The S950 is a wonderful machine. It's really special for looping and rimming samples. For some reason it's just more intuitive." As for the workhorse S3200 sampler Moby says, "The S3200 has two filter banks which I really like."*
