Clavia Nord Lead 2

Nord Lead 2 Image

The incredible Nord Lead synthesizer is taken a few steps further with the Nord Lead 2. It uses the same synthesis technology and sounds as good as the Nord Lead, but adds a few nice new touches. These features include a ring modulator, OSC 1 can sync with the white noise generator, increased LFO and arpeggiator waveforms and patterns, distortion in the squelchier punchier filter section and 4 individual outputs.

All the great sound, MIDI control and analog-like sound and design that made the Nord Lead famous return in this new and improved version. For those of you who do not need the 49 note velocity+aftertouch sensitive keyboard, there is a rack module version - the Nord Rack 2.

It really comes alive when you think of it as an 8 oscillator polysynth. You can have 4 pairs of oscillators running simultaneously, each pair doing something different - noise, analogue-FM, LFO drift, different morph group assignments - and you can run 4 arpeggios at different rates (without any tempo sync if you keep it away from MIDI clock) which can make for incredibly complex sounds. And all that before you then consider that the 2X can run each pair of oscillators through a different output into four different FX chains.

Excellent synth, still valuable even in 2012!

@nick having both the jupiter 8 as the nord.... i must say that you couldn't be further of the truth... people would want it to be close to the jupiter but oooh hell its far of it. none the less it can do things that the jp8 can't do and in this way it owns is right to exist as a great synth

Also, if you are in an 80's cover band, (as I've found myself lately) you can very easily replicate the sounds for any song that features a Jupiter 8 (which would have been the majority of songs produced in that era.) For this purpose, I was using a JP-8000 as my lead synth, but for whatever reason, I find the Nord to be a bit closer to the original Jupiter's "atmosphere." It also does a very gritty and convincing Prophet 5.

At this point, Ive owned (and used to capacity) nearly all the VA's worth menitoning from 96' on to 2012. The NL2X is my favorite. It sounds remarkable and truly does have it's own unique personallity and sound. I hate to say it, but I suspect many who don't like this synth somehow don't realise it has no built in effects. The NL is like a powerful, unique sounding vocalist who is natually strong and only uses effects as a garnishment. It's also perfect for live use from a functionallity stand point.

There wasn't a sound I couldn't make with the nord lead that I couldn't do with a sq80 . The real sour point was the complete lack of aonowledgement of a problem with my nord from the company itself. I bought mine brand new and one of the rotary encoders was bunk right from the word go. The company tried to pawn it off on me not using it properly, so the synth went shortly after I acquired it. I don't know whos distorting nord in north America now but I'd never do business with nord again.
