Clavia Nord Lead 2

Nord Lead 2 Image

The incredible Nord Lead synthesizer is taken a few steps further with the Nord Lead 2. It uses the same synthesis technology and sounds as good as the Nord Lead, but adds a few nice new touches. These features include a ring modulator, OSC 1 can sync with the white noise generator, increased LFO and arpeggiator waveforms and patterns, distortion in the squelchier punchier filter section and 4 individual outputs.

All the great sound, MIDI control and analog-like sound and design that made the Nord Lead famous return in this new and improved version. For those of you who do not need the 49 note velocity+aftertouch sensitive keyboard, there is a rack module version - the Nord Rack 2.

The Nord Lead 2 is the synthesizer of choice for many professionals including: The Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim, Nine Inch Nails, The Prodigy, Leftfield, Mike Oldfield, Front Line Assembly, KMFDM, Mirwais, Underworld, Jean Michel Jarre, Skinny Puppy, Depeche Mode, and A Guy Called Gerald.

Getting one of these soon, someone mentioned the price but hey it's handmade in Sweden - a country with a high standard of living. Gotta be more desirable than a 'made in china' unit, that will fall apart before long!

My only complaint is that the filter envelope can't go negative, which can be really limiting at times. Otherwise a great sounding, easy to control, and well built synth.

Ive never been sure of any of the Nord Synthesizers, their price is really hard to justify in terms of their features. Still a nice sounding and nice looking synth but the bang per buck ratio is hard to justify.

This is one helluva synth. My relevant references are se1, pulse, prophet 08, bit99, juno 106 and @juno 2. And even in this magnificient analog company the nord rack 2 really shines. It's simple and restricting, but with enough special tricks up it's sleeve to pull off some uterly unique non-analog sounds. Some of these little tricks are the FM ability and the notch+lp filter. Glassy digital bliss, jackhammer bassmonster kickdrums and MASSIVE bass emanates from this thing, granted you search a little with the knobs. I'd read that it wasn't much suited for bass duties, but this thing can rock the shorts of both the pulse and the se1 in the bass department (sic.). Don't think of this as a virtual analog. Think of it as a digital FM/subtractive bastard synth with 'analog' controls. Best build quality I've come across, I think, next to the K2000R. Serious stuff. Highly recommended.

This little jewel is one of the best kept secrets...get one, and hang on to it. I have owned both the Lead 2X and the Lead e...the NL3 has the best UI on the planet, bar none. But, I prefer the sounds of the NL2X...it's just more analog and less techno than the NL3. With a little patience, you can pick one up on eBay for a song.
