OB-Xa.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA.

The OB-8 is not better than the OB-X (and vice-versa). They are just DIFFERENT. Different sounding, different looking, different feeling, different possibilities. The price depends so much in wich condition it is.

And for reliability, both are Oberheims...when played in the studio, no problem. But when you take them on tour, and gigging, you will have problems. It's by far not so reliable like a Jupiter 6 or 8.
It is much easier to be a good equipment purchaser than to be a great musician.

Lots more modulation routings on the OB-8 due to the extra set of menus (a shift button).
No idea which one would be anywhere near possible to find these days in working order though.

The one EVH used in Jump is the best.

Well. I had them both :) I must say that bouth sounds almost same [obxa vs ob8] [there's easy mod for OB-8 to open some lower freq's]. Anyway... OB8 has arpegiator/page 2 and few other cool things. So... choose ob8 - u won't regret :)

I'm sorry, but as someone who has had all three, I would never say the OB-X and 8 sound almost the same. Not even close to my ears. The Xa and the 8 are a lot closer both being curtis chip machines, but the X is very different sounding. The X is closer to the four/ eight voice SEM synths.

The OBX is unique due to the non use of curtis chips on the voice and filters, I prefer the obx as it's the most organic sounding synth i have.

Although obies are very unreliable...Get to know a good tech.. :D

Yeah, Pointer Sisters really nailed the obie sound in that classic. I'm pretty sure they recorded it with an obxa, and then toured with an obx.

Once again, I vouch for the OB8 being the way to go. I've never played an OBX but from my reading it sounds like it's more of an SEM machine anyway. Having played an OB-Xa and owning an OB-8 I think they're extremely similar with the raw factor going to the OB-Xa. Both are really similar enough to not really tell the difference (especially in a mix or recording) but I like the fact that the OB-8 sounds just slightly smoother, is MIDI'd from the factory (atleast my REV is), has an arpeggiator with up down and random modes, and has the page 2 menu.

It all comes down to use and practicality for me; plus the OBX will be wicked expensive (given you can even find one that works).

That classic? I think Stab Frenzy refers to Eddie Van Halen playing the OB-Xa in Jump ;)

The synth in "Jump (For my love)" by Pointer Sisters is the OB-8 according to Micke.

Not in that thread, but the almighty guru stated that "Jump (for my love)" was made with the OB-8/DSX/DMX combo...the ultimate pre-MIDI setup! :D

Yeah, I do remember reading in an old keyboard magazine that the song was made with the Oberheim system.
I don't recall in what thread I posted about it though.
