What it does is it creates five consecutively shorter pulse waves and then locks them all into the same phase, giving you something that resembles a saw, but not closely. It sounds very icy and digital because of this, and the 61 produces real saw. That gives it a much warmer sound. The one thing that is similar between the two is the editing interface. You're using buttons to edit everything, but it works well and there's no menu diving for hidden parameters. I've never played a DW-8000, but between the 800 and 61, my vote is for the 61. If you can find a 61M get that: then you'll have MIDI implementation too.

3 year old thread.

A thread is never too old for a Poly 800! Alas, my poor Polly recently gave up the ghost. She was my first, and I will never forget her. But I may lay her to rest...in someone else's hands...especially since the price has gone way up in the past couple years....

i dont get it why they released a synth like the Poly 61 in 1982 without any controls?
there was cv/gate around since years and built in the polysix...
how people had to synchronise the poly61 without the midikit later?

Anything remotely digital was all the rage in 1982 and parameter entry was seen as OK because patch memory could recall your sounds instantly. Most people who bought these were just working stiff musicians playing pop music and not having to twist knobs to call up a sound for your next song was a relief. I gigged in a top 40 band with a guy who replaced both a Hammond M3 organ and an ARP Omni with a Poly 61.

The limited resolution was only because of expensive memory. One byte of memory could store one 256 step parameter, two 16 step parameters, four 4 step parameters or eight 2 step (on/off) parameters. It's easy to see how mfrs might try to wedge patch data into 32, 64, 128 bytes. If you have 32 patches to store and each is 128 bytes, you need 4K of memory which was a lot at the time.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

And the Poly61 was later midified (factory or not). If it offered midi right away, it might have been a lot more popular...

Good point.
Maybe they thought it would be the next best thing, so no need to control it from outside nor control anything else?
