ARP Omni VS Eminent 310U

Postby HideawayStudio » Sat Jul 14, 2012 10:36 pm

Well they are direct relatives....

I have a Omni-2 which I've been fixing up on and off for months and a 310U in restoration...

I'd been interested to hear people's opinions on these two venerable string synths....

To me, the Eminent is the one string synth that really nails that string-section sound that you hear a lot in TV/movie music and easy-listening recordings from the '60s. It's a very "sweet" sound. The Omni is a bit more synthetic-sounding and edgier. The best way to sum them up:

Eminent: Jarre, "Oxygen Part 1"
Omni: Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

I think the Eminent's size makes it somewhat irrelevant in this day and age, especially when you can get something like an Omni, or a Korg Lambda, or a Roland Paraphonic that sounds just as sweet, in a much smaller package. I feel that the string-machine sound is too easy to come by to justify having something as gigantic as the 310U. Now, the Hammond Novachord, on the other hand...
