There is a free sequencer called Jazz++ it works with General MIDI synths and nearly works with non-GM midi synths if you disable it's GM program-change message. (The metronome only works in GM mode).
Jazz++ would be really good if only they'd add a non GM metronome. It has all the basic editing functions of a MIDI sequencer.
I use Quartz Audio Master Freeware to record MIDI with a metronome or WAVE audio file, then I export the MIDI data and reopen it with Jazz++ for editing.
Until I buy a MIDI & Audio program, it gets the job done.
A good site for learning about software is http://hitsquad.com/smm
But be warned, I went through about 150 different shareware/freeware programs before finding only about 2 programs that worked on my system and had all the functions I needed.
Must Have functions:
* MIDI Thru switch (to prevent MIDI feedback loops) VERY IMPORTANT
* Metronome (MIDI and/or sonic)
* Copy & Paste
* Grid of measures (bars and beats)
I hope this helps
