Newbie question about MIDI/audio card

Postby moog-lover » Sat Mar 22, 2014 11:35 pm

This is basic, but now I'm wondering something.

1 -> Let's say I have an audio card without MIDI inputs but it is connected to my PC, with its ASIO drivers installed.
Now I connect a MIDI keyboard with USB port into my PC.
Both are connected to the PC, and in my sequencer I use my audio card and my MIDI keyboard with VSTs. Does that configuration have the same latency as if I connect a MIDI keyboard into an audio card which HAS got MIDI inputs?

2 -> Let's say I have a synth with MIDI input, and again, an audio card without MIDI input. Then I connect the synth with the PC using a MIDI-to-USB cable. Can I play the synth with my MIDI keyboard, also connected to the PC? Is the same latency as if I connect the synth directly with the MIDI keyboard?

The answer to both questions is YES, latency should be the same.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Thanks!

By the way, my MIDI keyboard is M-audio Oxygen 49. It doesn't have the conventional MIDI output. It uses something similar to the printer's USB connectors. In order to your answer I can play through my PC, that's great. But: Am I still able to find some adapter to connect it to a synth with conventional MIDI input? (Just to avoid having a computer)

No, although there are some small boxes that will act as a midi host now and do a similar thing. It's still using a computer, but it's a tiny computer in a box with no screen so almost like not using one at all. Check out the Kenton USB midi host and the iconnectmidi.

Yep, Kenton MIDI host box is what you need, I'm getting one:

http://www.kentonuk.com/products/items/ ... host.shtml

Enables USB only keyboards to connect to MIDI equipment, standalone, no computer needed, DC power supply included. Also provides power for the USB keyboard.

Stab: Your "computer in a box" wouldn't happen to be a v-machine, would it?

Cheers, Graham

gmeredith, Kenton's device is a computer in a box.

Oh I see. Thanks for letting me know. It is rather expensive to me just for my unique purpose, but it looks like it deserves it.
I made a mistake by buying the Oxygen49. I was conformed enough with its sliders and knobs, that response in real-time, whereas others show a little bit of stepping when moving them fast.
I didn't think about the midi input. I wonder why m-audio didn't include it, it shouldn't be so hard to include it. It must be conceptual.
Well..
Cheers

Older Oxygens have a midi port... We have an Oxygen 25 that we use all the time for testing synths, noodling around etc.
