Postby space6oy » Fri Mar 02, 2012 4:47 am

there's no freaking way i'm off on this memory, weren't roland SP-555s only around $400-500 like six years ago? they're being retailed for $900 now... baffling...

be aware that there is 'retail' price, and then there is 'what music gear is actually sold for' price...

some retarded stores sell it at the 'retail' price, but most dont

This is different. The price has been going UP.
And the unit has been out a long while.
That report is the current for sale price.

You're right. Pretty sure it was around £450 street and now around £640.

Roland cashing in on all the bands wanting to be Animal Collective?

I always thought it looked like it had a good set of features but the live sampling (while playing sequences) is very limited IIRC. Maybe that's been improved. Then again I use an ES1mkII which won't do anything of the sort...

Shouldn't this post be in Samplers?

Since a mod started it, I guess it can be put anywhere.
I consider the SP-555 a sort of sampling groovebox....
Certainly...um, not in software Synthesizers. Probably a small oversight.

The microKORG (everyone's favorite) is one of those pieces that has never seen a price drop after the initial dip.
It's STILL $399 USD. I'm not sure what that means.

yeah i remember it being 699, now 899 :?
I think roland realized that the market for what the 555 does did not really have any competitors:

2 gig mem card, loop capture, velocity pads, great effects, USB interface - I mean the ESX is great but its a very different beast, 404 doesn't do all that, you have the MPCs of course but they are expensive and more sequencing/tracking based vs. the 555 1-track sequence + wild effects.

I got mine for about 320 off of ebay back in the day, still one of my favorite pieces despite its limitations (no real panning/ no adsr)

Wow, that is weird.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

for the record, there are plenty available on ebay at less than what you guys are talking about

maybe its just the US price that is screwed? Seems a litle higher here than used to be, but only by about $100

whole point of my throwing this out there was being shocked by the retail price having jumped about $400 up. it's weird. and seems stupid.
