Trigger Out from MPC 1000

Postby haydenvan » Tue Mar 20, 2012 6:26 pm

What is the best way to get a programmable trigger out for analog gear (Roland sequencers, arpeggiators, etc) from one of the assignable outs on the MPC 1000? I tried blowing up samples such as rim shot or clicks but it was off timing.

Are you triggering a gate/envelope or a clock?

I guess a gate or click in. It would be 16th note 8th note or some sort of rhythm not 24ppqn or anything if that's what you're asking.

You just want a pulse that's at 0dBFS or thereabouts. You don't want an audio signal as that will have multiple potential trigger points, although they can sometimes work.

Easiest way to do it is to get a synth with a square wave, record the lowest sound you can get from it with a single oscillator into your MPC with the filter wide open and the volume all the way up, go into the sample edit mode and chop it so it's just a single cycle of the positive pulse and use that as your sync sample. That's what I did with my 2500 and it worked great.

If you've got a synth that goes really low you might not end up with a nice square edge on the waveform, if so sample a higher note and pitch it down if it's to short to work properly.

For a clock you can also try a constant tone (experiment with pitch, I'd go mid to high) with the amplitude modulated from silence to max with a square wave. Adjust the LFO rate to speed up or slow down the clock. Use PWM for freaky effect. Not sure if you could do that on an MPC.

I got it to work with Stab Frenzy's method. But will sending this audio trigger out from one of the individual outs in the MPC be damaging to any analog gate/trigger/step/etc inputs?

No, it's all just voltage.

I've done exactly this with my MPC1000 to trigger various things, such as SH-101, ProOne, MS20 etc. Works like a charm.

Using the multiple outs, I've built and sequenced entire live analog drumkits like this.

I just wish there were more outs on the MPC!

Just use the tape808trigger sample from Goldbaby.

Can't remember but I think it's included in one of their free kits.

Here's a WAV file I use on my 2500 to trigger analog gear:
