The 2500 is about 12 years newer than the 3000, has four times the memory, is a lot more flexible with the JJ OS and has more realtime control. Some people think the 3000 has a particular sound to its convertors though and prefer it. The 3000 was the second MPC and the 2500 was the last; the 2000, 2000XL, 4000 and 1000 came between them.

The LE and SE editions were just cosmetic changes, in use they're the same machine.

I own a 2500 (which I'm planning on selling soon, I've replaced it with an Octatrack) and wouldn't consider a 3000. Storage is much simpler on the 2500 and you have the bonus that it's had a decade less of being pounded on by someone you don't know.

The problem with buying decade-old MPC's is the pads have been beaten on for a decade too. They're not very responsive anymore.

The pads and the pad sensors can both be replaced if needed, in all MPC models.

Is the 3000 using disk, zip, or compact flash drive?

MPC pads are never what one would consider 'very responsive'. They also don't change in responsiveness over time.

As for which is better, that's subjective, and everyone will have his/her own rationale behind his/her preference. I've owned both and both are great machines for different reasons. I still have the 2500, for what it's worth...

The 3000's are going for 1200e with full memory ect /scsi over here and the 2500 are about 600e S/H....Also offered a 5000 for 800e....

I have always wanted the 3000....I only need one mpc and have it as a main part of my new studio.

I have a Mix 24 for recording.

Which way...?

I have a 3000 and I just got a 1000 for live stuff. I've also had a 2000xl and a 60 before. Basically, I think the 3000 is made a lot better than the newer ones. It feels solid and not like junk/plastic. But it misses a lot of features that would be very useful depending on how you work. There is no track mute page on a 60/3000. If I was going to buy one right now, knowing what I know and I would only have one, I would get a 2500 just because of the convenience factor.

Most people really can't tell the difference between the sound and the features and convenience of the new one just make it easier to do stuff. For me, the less resistance I have to completing a song, the better. Worrying about a scsi zip drive crashing or having to recap a 20 year old power supply is not really that sweet. With all that said, I'm not really a gear guy anymore. I mean I used to be, but I'm more interested in the outcome now than the means.

That's way way way too much for a 3000, the price must be up because of DJ Shadow and Dre using them. Get the 2500, I'd only consider a 3000 if you're nostalgic and not that interested in making music of if it was 2/3 the price of the 2500.

That's bogus I would definitely go for the MPC 2500. That's not a horrible price.

Thank you all for the very good advice. I am now leaning towards the 2500 because i have a S950 for that 12 bit sound anyway, Could be a practical solution to use both together.

Saw a MPC5000 at a good price...Is this really 2 x 2500's...?

5000 is quite different from the 2500. Another nice machine... Has filters, VA synth, and fx from the Alesis ION/Fusion.
