akai K4 power supply

Postby william2012 » Mon Jul 09, 2012 11:24 am

hey all. I am having a heck of a time finding one. is there an after market power supply that will work?
I mean with all the correct specs and all? it doesn't HAVE to say "AKAI" on it, does it? anyway, thanks
for any help. I'd love to sell it to someone who appreciates that kind of stuff. it's a neat old synth.
but I'm giving it to a woman so her kids can practice on it. pretty silly ay? she'll fall in love with me and we'll
live happily ever after, or not. anyway, I need a power supply. thanks!..........Bill

My supplier of choice for replacement wall-warts is www.JAMECO.com - they have a million !
Will look for the model # on mine and edit this post.

Good luck. I wooed my fair lady with a Korg SAS-20. Now she says: "Get those %#@# keyboards back in your workshop."
Old is not good - but I"ll bet I've got 30 years on you! (lol)
Very under-rated vintage synth: Great for dark, clanging "space-horror" pads!

Kawai power supplies are a bit weird. I'm interested to see what you guys turn up- I need power supplies for my K4r and q80EXE.

Thanks for the link, Rhino!

Years ago, wall warts were about 50-50% center-pos and center-neg. The center-negs lost ground over the years. but Kawai kept them into the '90's.

lol!! THIRTY years? how could you? you're Jack LaLanes cousin? that would explain it.

I too am interested, silver. would that it twere I had found this forum before I bought
an alleged ac adapter for my K$ off ebay. Egad! Ebay! check this out for some comedy.......

"Dear customer,
Thanks for your interest in our products.
The item is for kawai k4,but we're not 100% sure whether it's compatible with the old version.
to make sure, please double check the detail specifications like output, plug tip size (outside
and inside diameter) with your original one, if all matches, it?s the right part. Ours are as follows:
Output: 12V 1A (Normally for voltage, +- 10% tolerance is acceptable. for current, the higher, the better)
Plug tip size : 5.5/2.5mm negative inside.Thank you!
Best regards, Linda"

to make SURE? AFTER I bought it?

"please double check the detail specifications which you would have done before buying
it if you weren't such an idiot. sorry, sucker. let the buyer beware. gee whiz. I hope it works!
have a special day"

That sounds right to me.

You say you had nobody until you found us. Well, you're one of the crazies now. Sit back and enjoy the company and read the loony posts, pointless wrangling and bone-headed dogfights that this board is known for.

As for my age, same as Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.

The answer is really simple. Buy a centre positive supply of the right voltage and right sized plug and then cut the wire around 5" away from the plug and reverse and reconnect them thus changing the polarity. I've done this loads of times. If you use heat shrink it will look pretty neat and tidy.

greetings all. I got my ac adapter from baywatch or whatever that silly place is. it powers up the synth, but the synth don't make no noise. what did I do now? I was just wanting to use the sounds in the unit. I plugged in headphones. no midi cables. sadly, the manual is long lost. is there an idiot proof way to just turn it on and play? thanks!

I'm going to ask the Mods to move this to "help".

WELCOME TO THE HAPPY WORLD OF VINTAGE SYNTHS !!!!!!!

let's start with the usual questions:
1) are there readable words on the screen, or gibberish - or nothing.
2) Does the screen change when you press buttons?
3) NO sound, or some buzz, hiss, etc?
4) get the manual here: http://www.kawaius-tsd.com/OM/K_SYNTH/K4%20Synth.pdf

Sounds like the battery has died and erased the sounds.
1) where are you located?
2) can you solder?
3) do you have a MIDI interface on (or attatched to) your computer?
4) are you new to synths , MIDI, SYSEX data, etc?

I'm game to try and walk you thru a battery change and sysex data dump.
