ARP omni release

Postby sam » Thu Feb 20, 2014 9:12 pm

Hello everyone ...I have been away for a while moving house...

I am trying to fix a problem affecting the release. I have checked just about everything on the string board so i am now thinking the problem lies on the voice boards.

All the caps are replaced so thats not the issue here....

Has anyone here experienced release or maybe sustain problems on theirs..?

Did you replace the caps on the control/slider boards too? I have yet to do mine and have the same issue and was told I missed some...

The tantalum caps are all over the place. Close to 100 of them in an Omni. Even on the little VCF module board.

Thanks.....It can't be a cap fault or chip on the string board because i changed the lot...Except for a 4016 that just changes the lights...?

I don't get O/-15 on TP 1 though..?

This is really getting tricky....Hmm anyone..:)

Have you tested the release slider?

Yup...The sliders fine and cleaned /lubed ect....

I feel it's possible that a logic chip has failed down the line....My question is which chip affect the release time..?

I will also do the psu mod...

I had a new Omni 2 in the late 70's and the Release malfunctioned, staying long, shortly after I bought it. In this case it was a bad cap.

After some searching a couple of resistors were broken (look out for this on omni boards as the end goes straight into the pcb) and a paper cap was broken...Works now but a very annoying fix.

I just got an Omni and it has the same problem. mind taking a pic of the part(s) you fixed, just so I know where to look?

It's really a situation where you have to desolder the green or white caps and see if the legs are ok or connecting properly..Also the same with the resistors.

I would however change the tantalums (blue ) .....There is no easy option with this as you have to desolder the board and check what you can....This seems to be a common problem with this board.

Also check or replace the 2 22mf tants and the 100 ohm resistor under the release slider..

Helpful post. I'm working on one of these, all the notes behave as they should as I adjust the attack/release sliders *except* for the lowest 6 which are stuck on the long release time. I suspect it must be the green and white resistor block for that group - this post supports that idea.

maybe a dumb question but can you get replacements for these old block resistors?

Thanks!
