Problems with Freebass FB-383 MIDI-IN

Postby jancarlos » Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:41 am

Hi!

I just added freebass 383 to my gear and already have a problem.

I have old Boss DR-202 groovebox and only function that it now a days have is to work as a sequencer to other synths.
I set the midi channel on fb-383 to CH2 and hooked it to DR-202. I set 202's Bass channel to CH2 and set it to external. For some reason FB-383 doesn't seem to get any midi data from DR-202. Then I hooked my old MC-303 to DR-202 with same settings and everything works fine. Then I hooked FB-383 to MC-303's channel 2 and set it to External and now freebass sings beatifully.

DR-202 -> FB-383 = no sound
DR-202 -> MC-303 = works fine
MC-303 -> FB-383 = works fine

I didn't chance any settings between the experiments and for some reason Freebass just didn't recognice or receive any MIDI data from DR-202.

I really would like to use DR-202 as a sequencer to Freebass because it's easier to program and it has 99 empty patterns. With MC-303 stepsequencer it's harder to program those slides where notes overlap and memory is limited.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

Just from the top of my head, do you have the FB-303 manual? And have you tried CH1 instead of CH2? I don't have zit of experience with the FB-303 and Sonic State reports that it could be a challenge to properly set up MIDI without the manual...

From what you're describing, this is not an hardware problem but more like a communication problem between the 202 & 303. Odd. Surely just a setting, somewhere.

Sorry if I am of no immediate help. I didn't give it much thoughts.

I've tested all channels.. There is no problem between 202 and 303.. it's between 202 and 383.

It's wierd because there isn't that many settings to chance. 202 is set to use channel 2 and it's set to external. If I hook 383 to 202 there's no midi traffic. If I hook MC-303 to 202 with those same settings 202's sequncer send info nicely to MC-303.

Freebass doesn't have any settings.. just MIDI IN and that's it.

When I hook 383 to MC-303 and send midi data from channel 2 to freebass it works like a charm.

The only possibilitie is that DR-202's MIDI out lacks something that MC-303's MIDI out has. It sounds wierd because MC-303 recognise DR-202 sequences but not Freebass. Can there be some different with groundings.. That MC-303's MIDI out has for example all the wires connected and all grounds and DR-202's MIDI out has just needed minimal wires.. I dunno..

Freebasses MIDI activity light doesn't even lit when I connect it to 202. :?

I realized that I wrote FB-303 instead of FB-383. Sorry if I stirred confusion.

Just one wire at the 202's MIDI socket? And it worked with the MC-303? Weird.
