Akai VX600...impressions?

Postby 9mm » Mon Feb 18, 2008 3:55 am

did a search, didn't find much info. for some reason i'm really liking the sounds of the old akai analogs alot, so for those that owned one, what do you think? (too bad they are rare to find for sale)

I owned one briefly in the early 90's. To me it sounded much like my Matrix 6r and less like an AX. So I put it up for sale on rec.music.makers.synth and it was purchased by Taylor Dupree AKA Taylor 808, Human Mesh Dance, Prototype 909, etc.

I bought one from Mike Lindup of Level 42. It was a backup unit of his.

I dunno...it looked so awesome on paper, but in use, it was fairly lackluster.

Just shows VCOs and a mod matrix don't always deliver.

cheers,
Ian

I tried one out a few years ago at a store. I wasnt sure if it was broke or suppose to sound like shite, I liked the look of it.

if you do find one, and need a ram card for it....good luck...but Roland ME-256 cards work, from what I read.

These synths aren't worth it. They don't give you the power of any similarly priced synth.

Well.. I have one and I really like it.

It's not a do everything kind of synth, and you shouldn't expect it to.
Sometimes it's a bit too bright, it's hard to program multivoice patches, unless you mod it it's got a single mono out...functionally. no knobs for tweak..
But, I've always thought it sounded like pure sex with the right amount of delay and verb..
I wish I had some solo audio examples of it, but I really don't.. it is peppered all pretty much every song I've recorded though.

actually, here's a ok example.

the first voice you hear in this song.. the long env filter tone that's stepping octaves.. starting low and stepping through most of the keyrange.. that's the akai.

Is it worth being "rare" .. probably not.

hey, thanks for the info. besides it being limited and a little over priced for what it is. i was wonderig if it was worth it if i found it really cheap. for some reason i still dig the sounds, and it was used alot by some old industrial bands i love.

keep the info coming.

It has a resonant filter that sounds like chirpy birds.

Do you know this site?
