Solina string ensemble Dead voices

Postby Yekuku » Fri Jun 12, 2009 12:11 pm

Hi guys,
I have a Solina string ensemble which produces no output when using the horn & trumpet voices.
Viola&violin , cello & contrabass seems to work fine.
does anybody know if this is an easy fix ? I have this problem since the day I bought it but I was not concerned because all i have wanted was the strings sound. the guy that sold it to me told me that maybe sth became loose inside and it would be probably an easy fix. Actually i doubt that, my guess is that the osc module is dead, but since i have no experience in repairing a solina, I though it would be better to ask for advise here.
Did anybody else experienced such a behaviour in a Solina ?

And sth else :
It needs 30 minutes to warm up and it is a bit out of tune.
Do u think that by recapping it , the warm up time will decrease and the tuning issue can be improved?
does anybody have any calibration info about the Solina?

Thanks in advance :D

If the string sections work but the horn and trumpet sections do not then the problem will almost certainly be in either the formant circuit or in the horn/trumpet preamp circuit. You could check transistors 5 and 6, and any tantalum capacitors near them if any.

Thank you very much for your help Steve :D
I ll try to check it out this weekend and I will let u know.

Do u think that if I replace all the caps, the tuning issue can be improved ?

thanx again :)

You could change any electrolytics in just the power supply and the master oscillator sections first and see if that helps. Usual cautions apply with working on the power supply, make sure that you are un-plugged and know what you are doing for the sake of both you and your Solina. Do you have a schematic?

Hi Steve and thanx again.
I have experience in repairing digital synths but no vintage like this.
Recapping and checking transistors is an easy task for me, but if things get more complicated and special parts are needed, I 'll take it to a repair shop.
Yes I do have have the schematics for the MK2 version, I grabbed them from here:

Thanx for taking the time to help me out , I really appreciate it :D

OK, I was looking at this schematic: http://oldschoolsound6.free.fr/manuels/ ... solina.pdf

I will have to see if they match so that we are on the same page.

This is my Solina, which I think is the latest version , the mk2 :

Unfortunatelly it did not have a service manual inside and there is no info available about the different Solina models, so I guess I 'll have to to open it up and check if the service manual is the right one.
thanx for your help :D
