Let's see...

I would get rid of the SH-2. It's a GREAT mono, but it's nothing that can't be replaced. Compared to the Jupiter 4, it doesn't remotely stand up. The JP-4 has four voice polyphony which can be stacked in unison for a mono sound that the SH-2 could never do. It has the ensemble effect, the LFO bend modifier which is worth it's weight in analog gold, and the LFO goes into deep space territory. Also... you can save your sounds!

The JX3-p has a killer tone to it. It's dark and deep, and for DCO's, it sounds thick and powerful in my opinion. It also sports a 24 db filter which is the same as the one in the Jupiter 8. The 3-p definitely sounds unique. Awesome synth. I think it KILLS any Alpha Juno.

The Jupiter-4 is a unique gem. This is true about lots of other Synths but the Jupiter-4 is one of THE most unique of all. I guarentee you will miss it if you let it go, i love my Andromeda but i still miss my old Jupe like mad. It may have no external control but it's a box of magic that Synth is. :D

My Jupiter -4 has CV/Gate Control on all 4 Voices + Midi
somehow i was thinking my Sh-2 was more poerful in sound.. Didnt use the Jp4 much yet in any Production yet though

I love the JX-3P so I would advise you keep that (over an Alpha Juno). Such a characterful sound and different to other 'meatier' synths. Very retro.

How do the liquidy filters and snappy envs compare on the JP4 and SH2?

I would hold onto the SH-2, it has nice phat bass and leads, especially through a Korg Stage Echo. The Roland Jupiter is a very unique synth too, so you might want to delve into that as well. JX-3P vs. Juno 2, that's a good question; I've always been preferential to the Juno's, but the JX-3P has the sequencer and polyphony. It depends what you feel comfortable around.

They don't, because the JP-4 and MRS-2 (Promars) have a liquidy filter, while the SH-2 (and SH-09) do not. The SH-2 filter is dry by comparison.

clusterchord made some recent comments about this in the Promars thread, IIRC.

cheers,

As do many other Roland analogues of the 80s. There's nothing unique about the JP-8's filter IC, it's just a quad OTA and appears in the Junos, SH-101 and later JP-4s, to name a couple. More info on Roland filters here. There's some detail missing, but I can tell you the JX-8P and JX-10 do not use that particular IC. From what I recall from browsing the service notes recently, they use a combined IC that includes a VCA, but is not the same thing as the Juno 106...

I had both Jupiter4 and SH2 and IMHO Jupiter is a poly SH2...
Then, keep the poly 8)

SH2 has 2 oscillators and the JP4 doesn't have unison detune like the JP6, so it's not quite the same. JP4 has a noisy BBD chorus with no modulation speed dial, and I think it kinda sounds like a Juno 6/60 myself. SH2, I felt, was great for basses, and seemed brighter with the cutoff fully open. None of them sound very aggressive, despite the JP4's ability to overdrive the VCA. That just sounded like ugly clipping, to me.
