Novation XioSynth and X-Station

Postby serv » Wed Apr 07, 2010 5:11 pm

I got Novation X-Station recently and I like its sound a lot.
I am thinking about getting another VA at a cheap price, and I think I might go with another Novation synth again, Xiosynth.

Do they have different sound or are they pretty much identical?
Can someone tell me what "X-Gator" of Xiosynth is?

Thank you.

They should be identical except the Xiosynth also adds the "Filter Shape" parameter and the X-Gator you mentioned.

(From the Novation site) "Xio is the only Novation synthesiser to feature the X-Gator patch programmer. The X-Gator can be made to gate each patch to create unique 16-32 step rhythmic patterns for every onboard sound, all automatically synchronised to MIDI clock from a sequencer; just press and hold one key to groove along to a track with style. A display shows clearly the position and volume of each and every step"

Yeah, I think most of their recent synths have used pretty much the same sound engine, with maybe a few minor differences here and there. I have an A-Station and I was looking into the V-Station software as a patch editor when I came across the chart below. Since you can transfer patches between all of these synths, that indicates to me that they are all more or less the same.

There's minor differences between them all... polyphony, capabilities, etc

But the overall sound is pretty much the same, I think you'd regret getting a Xio as your second synth to an X-Station. I'd be looking at one of the other options around that price range like a Micron or maybe even an Evolver or Mopho or something like that, it's give you a much wider palette of sounds to choose from.

you might have more fun with a used nova laptop.

Nova laptop is a great recommendation - had one and traded it , sort of regret but I replaced with an x-station so I'm not doing too bad; the nova did have a lot more options though in terms of mod matrix / multitimbral / more voices / more than one filter etc.

For cheap, I think the Roland SH32 looks like a cool desktop piece as well, nice and knobby.
