Using Korg MS10 Wheel

Postby sequentialsoftshock » Fri Feb 17, 2012 4:24 am

So, I've never really gotten around to using the wheel on my MS10. I've tried with several different routings, but they have not worked, so I believed the circuit to not be fully working. However, I recently read that it won't modulate certain inputs. What could I use to test it say as a pitch wheel & adjusting cutoff frequency or PWM ?

From my time with an MS-10, I recall it just putting out a variable voltage - so as long as you patch it into something that takes a voltage source, it should affect it. If it doesn't, it needs fixing.

To control pitch with wheel :

1. Patch the wheel output to VCO Freq
2. Set Pitch EG/Ext to e.g. 5 (this controls the depth of pitch mod)
3. Press key, & move wheel. The pitch will change

To control filter cutoff with wheel :

1. Patch the wheel output to VCLPF cutoff frequency
2. Set Cutoff Frequency Modulation EG/Ext to e.g. 5 (this controls the depth of the filter cutoff mod)
3. Press key & move wheel. The filter cutoff will change.

You get the general idea I hope.

If neither of these work, then something is wrong.

Pitch doesn't work. Cutoff good. =/

Try cleaning the jacks. If that doesn't work, open it up and check the wiring. The jacks are mounted apart from the main PCB and there might be a loose/dry joint.

Try modulating the pitch with something else. For instance, patch pink noise to it and set the knobs as psy_free described, then see if something happens. Should not be a problem with the wheel when it works with the VCF.

For PWM, you need to set the PWM intensity with the PW/PWM knob (and adding some modulation source to the PWM input of course). The MS 10 PWM is awesome.

The wheel is also nice to just open the VCA (patch to INITIAL GAIN) to send stuff through the filter.

MS10 PWM IS awesome. That's half the reason I got it over the 20. I've used that a bunch, just not with the wheel yet.
