Yamaha E70 Voice Cards in a CS80

Postby fzp52j » Thu Apr 05, 2012 1:57 am

I have a Yamaha CS50 and a just got a Yamaha E70 Electone organ. I know that the E70 has the same PASS architecture as the CS50/CS80. So does that mean that I could swap out a voice card in my CS50 with a voice card in the CS80??????

I assume not because they connecting wires are different. But if anyone know, it would be helpful. One of my CS50 voice cards has something wrong with it and I cant get notes in tune throughout the entire range of tones (yes I know how to calibrate it).

E70 voice cards are completely different. There is one card which contains LPF filters for all voices, the second card has HPFs, then there is VCA card etc. And oscillators are digital, and the are also on separate two cards. So, if your CS50 has tuning problems, then E70 cards won't help.

Yeah, CS and E70 are totally different. I have some working CS50/60 voice cards if you need one.

No thanks Doug. I had extra voice cards for my CS50 at one time. It wasnt that big of a deal to invest that much $$$ into one, so I sold them all. But I may need a VCF chip off one. IDK. Do you, or does anyone else, know if any of the individual IC chips are the same? I've heard that most are not. Specifically I am curious about the some VCF and VCA chips.

I have the CS series chips as well. I don't think the E70 has the same ones.

To swap voice cards between a CS-50 or CS-60 and a CS-80 you need to replace 5 resistors and three trim pots and then re-calibrate. Also make sure that the VCO voice rankings match or are close. There are no other differences between the boards.

on that note, does anyone know where to get calibration instructions thst are specific to the cs50. I remember a while back when i first calibrated my cs50 there were a few things that seemed to reference patch points that werent there or named different bwcause I never founs anything other than cs80 cal instructions in the service manual (or was it cs60).

The best CS-80 calibration guide is not in the CS-80 service manual, there is a separate 32 page calibration guide that Yamaha published.

Yeah thats the guide I am talking about. It's not a CS-50 cal guide and there are some things that are different. Basically I had to resort to blindly cranking trimmers for some portions. Luckily everything is fine besides one filter sweep across the voice.
