JX-3P vs MKS-30

Postby 8bit9bot » Sun May 05, 2013 4:59 am

I am thinking about getting one of these. Differences I know about:

1) JX has a sequencer
2) JX has older roland IR chips
3) MKS has the dying 106 chip issue
4) MKS has velocity
5) MKS has more memory slots

Other than that... is there any tonal difference? I prefer rack equipment (to save space) whenever possible so I'm leaning towards the rack despite the dying chips issue.

JX-3P can be upgraded by KiwiTechnics: http://kiwitechnics.com/jx3pupgrade.htm

Not aware of any tonal differences. I've never been able to A/B the 2.

I actually had both for awhile. I liked the JX-3P better. I guess that the filter chip makes a noticeable difference. One thing I did not like about the JX-3P was no response to midi velocity, which the MKS had.

Later model JX-3Ps can be booted into velocity mode by holding down one of the front panel buttons. Down side is the keyboard is not usable, but if played by MIDI, you get velocity. It makes it a big JX-3P module with velocity.

How do you program the velocity parameters (VCF & VCA)?

I don't think you can control them... I think it's hard wired to the VCA only. Remember, the JX-3P was one of the first MIDI synths so things were pretty wild and crazy back then!

If you have the right EPROM in it, here's what to do (from a SOS article linked to below):

DYNAMICS WHEN PLAYED FROM A TOUCH-SENSITIVE MODULE

• With JX3P off, hit and hold key 7.

• Turn on power.

• Keyboard will cease to function. (Local operation is now off).

• Synth will now act as a touch-sensitive module.

Further reading of the SOS article shows this:
Alternative method:

• Hit Tape Memory.

• Hit and hold key 7.

• Hit Tape Memory again.

• To reset the JX3P, turn it off, then on.

FOR MIDI CHANNEL 3 OPERATION WHILE IN DYNAMICS MODE

• Turn on dynamics operation as detailed above -- via either method.

• Hit Tape Memory.
