Parts for Elka Synthex?

Postby Cybercardinal » Sun Jun 16, 2013 8:48 pm

How hard is it to find parts for the Synthex? (been offered one that doesn't work)

I imagine something like the joystick could prove difficult to replace.

But what about the rest? Anybody know anything?

AFAIK the last factory made Elka Synthex went to Stevie Wonder to be used as a parts synth for his other synthex. So you might start there :P

The Synthex uses 8 CEM3320s for its filter chips. I have them in stock if you want backups...

Thanks Doug. I will keep that in mind.

Does the Synthex have electronics that are hard to find or irreplaceable?

Well I found this on gearslutz:

"After having mine repaired by James at synth services in the UK due to the previous seller wiring things up wrong, i asked him about future reliability/parts etc. He told me that the synthex is not unreliable at all, its a solid unit and the parts which can fail after many years can be purchased off the shelf, theres no specialist parts, other than 1 or 2, the joystick for one of them which are not known to fail(only damaged) and can still be repaired. I dont know why people feel worried about its reliability tbh. You can fix them yourself and buy the parts off the shelf if you can work an oscilloscope."

I had both of my Synthex's serviced and maintained by James Walker with no problems sourcing the bits I needed 'except' the case fan. That was replaceable but the new ones always gave a vibration/hum, even when using rubber mountings. In the end, I just put the noisy old one back in which was better than the vibration.

He also said at the time, that parts were good for at least another ten years..... That was about three years ago. I suspect they're still obtainable after that, just maybe harder to find like some other vintage synths I guess.

Buy it.... it's worth it. :)

No need to anymore, they've both gone. :(

Despite being the best synth I've ever owned, the money the last one was worth was considered better somewhere else (in life's expenses) in the end.
