Getting an iPad4, 32G wifi - set me up!

Postby gmeredith » Tue Jun 25, 2013 4:56 am

I've got one on order! Pretend this is yours, ok, (it's not though  ) and tell me what you would install as "must-haves" from top to bottom as a hot-shot live performance iPad, both in software apps and also in hardware add-ons and accessories.

Studio stuff as well is welcome. Everything from freeware synths apps to high end DAWS, vst plugins etc. You name it.

Also, tips and tweaks for it to get the best live performances out of it.

I already have an Edirol UM1EX MIDI-USB cable - what else is needed?

Controller keyboard? External audio interface (multi simultaneous inputs for multitrack recording?)

What about docking station/iPad monitor speaker systems?

Go on - you know you want to - blow the hypothetical budget
Make me a shit-hot iPad live workstation!

Cheers, Graham

Soundboard is also pretty essential for music

http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/soundboard-ipad/

You can assign any audio clips from any ipad synth to the pads and tap them to play live.

There are several MIDI sequencer apps too, Cubasis, or Genome, they can also assign tracks to synths and play them without having the synth on your main screen all the time. They can sequence both audio and midi tracks just like Cubase.

The Arturia iMini is a good version of their famous Minimoog V clone for PC/Mac, with an optimized interface for touch screen.

Older dock units might be a problem for the ipad4, since it uses the tiny "lightning" connection plug instead of the old wide one. So you'll need an adapter, which will make it impossible to seat the ipad into the docks.

Thor and animoog for synths, maybe consider Alchemy, Sunrizer (and Bismark for its sf2 library import). Jamup or Amplitube for guitar. Turnado and LiveFx for realtime effects. Audiobus to tie them together.

Should get you started, but these are the most commonly praised - thor is new, but proven elsewhere, and I own all of the above so can vouch for them!

Wow this is great! I like the look of those iElectribe stuff (and the rest of the korg stuff) - i hope they end up as useful as the hardware ones.

What about hardware - any external sound devices for multitrack - perhaps 4 ins at least? Will any USB audio interface work with a lightning-USB adapter? I resume drivers are still needed for the audio hardware...

Sure, USB is still USB, it's just the connector on the ipad end that is different :) Just be aware of buying dock gear meant for the old connector, you won't be able to seat the ipad into the dock with the adapter on it.

I'm just putting in this link to another iPad thread for my (and others) reference, since it's along the same line of topic with some good suggestions:

What? No love for NanoStudio?

I love NanoStudio and it's probably one of the only all-in-one studio apps that I really liked. It was (and I think still is) fairly inexpensive for all it has to offer. Great 'studio' app for sure.

Hear, hear!

I have NanoStudio on an iPad 4. I also have a USB adapter for the iPad, which plugs into a standard powered USB hub. Into that hub plugs in an M-Audio Oxygen v8 MIDI keyboard. That gives me enough to do things with.

NanoStudio is nice, because although can use AudioBus to connect to other apps, it's complete enough to use by itself. I like this aspect of it, as it reflects why I wanted to use the iPad in the first place: speed and simplicity.

Here's a couple of examples I've knocked up over the last few months:

Tears for Fares

Pearl with a Girl Earring

As you can hopefully hear, whilst these aren't top-notch in terms of audio production, it's sufficient to put ideas down, then export to PC for a full production. Being able to snatch a quiet hour in the evenings, and compose on the sofa with nothing other than an iPad and a pair of headphones, is great -- gone are the days of peace and quiet, when no children pulled at my arm going "Daddy daddy daddy..."
