iPad 4/Lightning...audio over USB?

Postby meatballfulton » Mon Jun 24, 2013 7:20 pm

I own a class compliant M-Audio controller that supports both MIDI and audio (44.1/16 stereo in/out) over USB.

Will the Apple Lightning camera connector pass audio over USB as well as MIDI?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

I believe it depends on the app as well as the power consumption. You can't instantly plug in a multi channel interface to the iPad, even if you have the units power adapter in. In my experience it will still show the power consumption is too high.
bonne chance

Mr Fulton,

There is a way around this. If you attach your iPad to a powered USB hub, you can connect the M-Audio controller to that. The iPad should still see the controller, but the hub will be powering it.

I did this with an Oxygen8 v2 - which is MIDI only; worked with Nanostudio a treat. Let us know how you get on,

Cheers

I don't need power over USB, just audio.

Guess this means a trip to the Apple Store :help:

Ah no, the power's not for the iPad -- it's just so the controller can draw power from the hub, rather than trying to draw it from the iPad.

Some USB audio and MIDI interfaces work just fine without a powered hub, but yeah, many do not. I use the Lightning-USB Camera Connection kit with a M-Audio Keystation 61ES and I don't need a hub, but that's MIDI only.

At least some interfaces can provide audio as well as MIDI simultaneously to the iPad, Novation Xios can do this (with a hub) as well as Apogee's latest Duet and Quartet, probably others as well.

My controller has it's own PS, using a powered hub just adds an extra box.

Just checked with Apple via online chat and was told no, it won't work.

So does mine, but for some reason the Oxygen8 still wants to try and draw power from USB - even if I've got an adapter plugged into it; hence the USB hub. Anyway, sorry to hear it didn't work out in the end.
