The manual is here but the units are still not shipping, maybe summer NAMM will have more news.

Quickies from the manual:

-- Includes a USB power supply...means one less jack on the unit.

-- Stereo I/O with two 1/4" jacks, L/Mono and R; 1/8" headphone out

-- samples must be mono though they can be panned and retuned

-- supports WAV at 48, 44.1, 32, 22.05 or 11.025K at 16 bits

-- Max memory is only 30MB across all 8 pads (no streaming, ouch) :oops:

-- pads can be used for MIDI control with polyphonic aftertouch

-- no info on the built-in samples

-- onboard reverb, depth is assigned per pad

-- one shot, hold and loop triggering per pad

-- a kit is a set of 8 pads, can be internal or external (on SD card) though no mention of how many kits you can have

-- max number of files (both individual samples as well as saved kits?) on SD card is 512 regardless of size

-- free downloadable sample editor

-- MIDI IN and OUT using supplied 1/8" to 5-pin DIN cables

I looked at the MIDI spec a bit ago, and it won't accept pitch bend data.

I was wanting to buy one but the more I look at it, the more unappealing it becomes. The 30MB limit is kind of a turn off. Streaming longer samples was one of its highlights in my mind before I saw that. For $99 new though, it isn't too bad

They're now available everywhere for $99. Not bad but I'll be waiting until the Ebay music retailers are selling B-stocks for $69 or so

Are they available now? All the sites I looked on said it was still on pre-order.
I want it for its pads as much as I want it for its sampling. I'm getting so tired of piano rolls..

The manual states that the editor is used for transferring damples to the SD card, although it can be done without it.

Be aware that the unit isn't capable of sampling, only sample playback.

I knew it couldn't sample, but I want to use the pads to control my main sampler. Just a mix-up of words I suppose

I just saw this last night, and I'm into the idea, but is there anything a bit more full featured for a similar price (between $100 and $200)? Or should I just grab this? Sampler n00b.

Nothing available new as far as hardware goes. There are all sorts of used things of varying capabilities you could find in that range used. But a caution with older units is that they use older sorts of data storage materials like Smartmedia cards that may be a bit of a problem to find.

if you have an iphone 4 or 5 (or a 5th gen ipod), the beatmaker2 app goes for $20. that plus an iConnectMIDI2+ ($120 with adapter) and a cheapo midi controller can work wonders (being a noob, you'll have a lot of questions tho)

Just came across Nick Batt's (Sonic Lab) review of the Akai, and he mention's that the firm ware is upgraded to allow for stereo samples:
