Roland JD990 + SRJV04 or Roland XV5050 + ultimate keys?

Should I give up the JD with SRJV04 (Vintage Board) and go for the XV with Ultimate Keys board?

Probably not. The JD-990 has a larger screen for editing. Now if you were talking XV-5080 + SRX-07, that might be better.

I can't remember, do the XVs have ring modulation like the JD-990?

Screens are basically the same on the JD990, JV2080 and the XV5080. Ring mod is present on the XVs, but they lack the oscillator sync of the JD.

There was a nice thread on GS on a close question.
AFAIR, with XV5050/5080 + SRX-07, you'll get all the same samples - but not the specific presets for JD-990 that are there on SR-JV80-04.
Another point to consider is the filter resonance + headroom issue inherent to JDs.

You may also try asking Don Solaris directly, he's an expert in JD-990.

I don't like the drums, but the drums like me!

I've decided to stick with the JD990.
