iPad audio interface, looping sequencer, and audio editor?

Postby JSRockit » Thu Nov 21, 2013 6:10 pm

Hello All. I just started making music after a few years away and am looking for a simple set-up. In the past i used a Macbook, Apogee Duet, Live, Peak, and Logic. I'm not really interested in that type of set-up anymore. I have an iPad and I think it might be better for what I'm looking to do which is use a very small and portable music making set-up. I use hardware synths and drum machine to make loops, so I won't be using any softsynths.

In the past I used Live to sequence the loops into songs. What iPad App is similar to Live with regard to loop sequencing?

Also, which iOS audio editors and iOS audio interfaces are worth looking into. A simple stereo in will do.

Thanks.

I think this one looks pretty awesome:

Although it might not be what you need.
The Behringer UCA222 might suit your needs better

Regarding apps, I highly recommend you check out the following (not sure, though, what would be the best approximation to Live, so these are some general tips):
- Samplr
- Waldorf Nave (awesome synth)
- Korg iKaossilator
- Looptastic (might be what you're after)

Also be sure to pick up the multi effect processor Turnado (along with Audiobus)

Regarding editors, there is an app called Hokusai.
I think Beat Maker 2 has waveform editing options

Hey, JS, nice to hear from an old VSE regular :) Spotted you while lurking on rf-forums...

Don't think there is anything as full featured as Live for the iPad, but something like Beatmaker 2 may get you close.

Then there is Cubasis, or simpler stuff like Musaico.

Regarding audio interfaces the new Apogee Quartet/Duet are probably pretty nice. There is some more info on workable interfaces on the Auria homepage.

Evening JS -

I've found there's a lot to be said for using the iPad as a self-contained unit. I too haven't used my instruments in anger for an age, but I found it very liberating to sit down with the iPad at night when the house is quiet and childless, and tap out a few tunes on Nanostudio. I can still plug in an external keyboard if I want it*, but just using one app and the touchscreen simplifies music-making by removing all the crap you go through when setting up an recording on a PC.

[*] Via Apple USB camera plug

The results can sound pretty good, but there's always audio/MIDI export if I need to polish them up.

Anyways, just my penny's worth - good to see you back old man.

Cheers

Get Beatmaker 2 and the new Apogee Duet or One that work with the iPad. Both have two channels in. You won't be disappointed as I have worked extensively with this setup.
bonne chance

I just got animoog and I am really happy with how it sounds in contrast to my other gear. I pump it into the inputs of my su700 and it does pads beautifully. I sample into my hardware and I must say it is just awesome in regards to how it extends my sonic palette for peanuts.

The ipad needs proper housing:

the problem with the one from Alesis is that it doesnt transmit sysex(zoiks)
