Korg Polysix mod: Polysex

Postby tubbutec » Mon Sep 02, 2013 10:23 am

Hi,

I would like to announce my Korg Polysix modification kit, the Tubbutec
Polysex.

It adds an additional control panel to the Polysix and increases its
musical possibilities.

There are two different mods which can both be used at the same time:
The pitch mod routes the envelope to the pitch. You can choose the
polarity of the envelope and the reference point in the envelope where
the pitch is not changed. This mod is very useful to create portamento
like effects, brass instruments, percussive sounds and much more.

The second mod is the voice spread mod which is a very powerful tool.
You can determine the amount of voice spread, route the envelope and one
of two LFOs to it and switch voice spreading on and off in poly mode.
This mod can be used to adjust and modulate the fatness of the sound in
unison mode, in poly mode you can modulate how detuned the Polysix
sounds. This can lead to more natural sounds, but can also be used to
accomplish complex sound effects.

Very nice work. I have often dreamed of such a unison detune feature for the Juno-106 as I no longer have a Polysix.

Unfortunately the Juno 106 is DCO based with one master oscillator for all the voices. So a simple mod like this is not possible. Instead you would have to build 5 more high frequency master oscillators.
Changing the control words of the DCOs would only get you a course adjustment of the pitches. :-(

Very nice! Simple idea, well implemented, and useful. More please!

I sometimes toy with the idea of adding a filter envelope and some detuning to the Junos. Even thought about a 2nd osc for the things, but that digital control gets in the way a bit.

Jea, quite hard with the DCOs...
An additional filter envelope however is not too complicated, if you only design an AR envelope..

WOW. I just checked out the audio demos on the website. This mod is pretty freaking cool. I will be ordering one of these soon.

Guess I gotta get a Polysix as well...;)

Great work - and very nicely finished with that screw on plate - looks almost factory. Bit out of my price range for a 'kit' but the plate definitely makes it a professional looking mod.
