Rack/Module Recommendations

Postby pmh » Wed Jan 29, 2014 9:24 pm

I've enjoyed playing around with some rack units and a module recently, and would like to try out a few more.

The rack units I currently have were quite cheap, and worth owning to add to my collection and have a play about with.

Any recommendations for rack units /modules to try out?

A list of some of the equipment I currently own is >here<

Kind regards,

Phil

The Nord 4 Lead is certainly on the wants list, but I'm thinking sub £100 units at the moment, just for a mess about.

Kind regards,

Sub £100 ? Well okay then i grabbed myself the Emu XL-1 the other week on Ebay for £87. These are cool little 1u racks with great sounds. The filters on the EMU units are great too. Have a look at them on Ebay i'm sure they come up regular.

I'm flogging a TX81Z if you're interested. Otherwise, I think dabbling with your existing U-110 should show results, especially if you pick up a couple of the sound cards for it. It could be argued that these days they're totally obsolete, but it's quite simple to program when you spend a little time with it. I didn't like the Proteus FX much, I found it too plasticky-sounding. The piano on the 110 is quite nice and you can fake some Mellotron patches with some judicious combinations of sounds and a phaser and crappy compressor.

How about a cheap old sampler? Should add something else to the table.

That's a good price, I'll watch out for one. There are a few Orbits out there at the moment.

If you like your U110 and D20, look around for any of the JV and XV modules (there's about a dozen in all) that fit your budget.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

If you like your D20, step up and get the D-550.

I also have a K1r that I love the 80s sounds from.

What about a rack sampler - Emax I or II, S-550, S-750, S-760, S-900, or S-1000?
Fairlight IIx (Mid-Life Crisis - cheaper than a Corvette!)
Roland JP-8, D-50, S-50, S-550(2x), S-760(2x), JX-3P, JD-800
EII, Emax II, Minimoog, ARP 2600, P-5 Rev.1 (broken...), Pro-One, Crumar Performer, K1m, K5m, MS-2000B, Virus KC, a few other things.

Looking through eBay, for a few of the suggested examples and spotted an E-mu Orbit and a Yamaha MU50 XG. They were both cheap, and looked interesting, so snapped them up.

Looking forward to their arrival.

Kind regards,
