MOOG SUB37 vs KARP Odyssey

Postby zoomtheline » Tue Feb 18, 2014 5:38 pm

Now, i'm not really a fan of these types of threads as usually you can just find out for your self or just dive in and try them to make your own mind up, it's pretty subjective anyway right?

I have not touched these before, obviously. Not even a Subphatty or the original Odyssey but there is not denying that there are obvious things in common with these two.

I have pretty sold myself on the SUB37 but this crazy odyssey news came straight out of left field.

Maybe it's worth discussing the pro's and cons of each? as many will be in this same conundrum.

KARP Odyssey?
Something sounds fishy about that.....

all kidding aside, I'd go with the moog simply due to it's paraphonic mode, and the knobbiness.

I nearly put Karpov codyssey but thought too silly ;)

Well, they are both 2 osc with duo phonic mode in pretty much the same way so there's the obvious comparison.

I don't think they'll be in the same ballpark pricewise. The Sub 37 will be double to triple the cost of the KARP.

-- Moog will have full MIDI implementation...knobs sending CCs, patch memories, velocity, aftertouch, etc. KARP most likely will not.

-- Moog has bend and mod wheels, KARP will have "PPC" (pressure sensitive) bender only.

-- Moog has limited CV inputs, if KARP is true to the original it will have CV/gate/trigger ins and outs.

-- Moog will sound, eh, Moogy. ARPs always had a thinner, more cutting sound.

-- Moog will be made in USA, KARP most likely in China.

-- Moog will be about $1500, KARP...who knows.

I think you're probably right, well, I hope you're right because then maybe I could afford to save for the arp after with that timescale.
Of course the moog has more modulation, the arp, sequencer and various filter and envelope parameters which make it more flexible but the arp has some cool quirky features that you don't really see often. Is that sound and heritage worthy of squaring up to the fully featured moog?

100% SPECULATION (from a phattyTE owner, ex-Voyager owner, and moderate ARP freek)

the moog is growly and schmoove, a bit thicker and rounder in sound, and will feel more ...expensive; well-behaved.

the Koddy will be brash and blaster-y (if they do it right). it will probably be a lot lighter in build and parts.
a bit toy-ish in feel, yet more fierce and sooo classic sounding, ironically.

a subPhatty compares a lot better price & complexity-wise.

Pretty much nailed it. Except most of the Moog will be made it China too. At least the cases will be stuffed in the USA for the tribute.

Really, Moog is having most of the mfg done in China these days? Sigh...

What, you don't think people in China can make things as well as people in America?

The Little Phattys were all made in China and then assembled in the USA, nobody ever complained about it before.

Where did you get that info? I have been trying to figure out for myself whether that's true or not.

From Moog themselves then the LP was first announced. The boards are made and populated in China and then shipped to the US where finally assembly is done (ie they put the boards in the casings, attach the other bits and pieces, do final testing and calibration). So they can say 'made in the USA' on them as that's where the final process occurred but the actual circuitry, all sound generating parts are made in China.

I don't need a new Odyssey and I rarely buy modern synths but the two things that I am putting money aside for and am excited about are the the new Moog (I love duophonic lead synths) and the Roland TR-8 ( I have inside info and it will be amazing). The thing that I really love about all this new gear is that HARDWARE IS BACK!
