Yamaha DX100 Programmable Controllers?

Postby Rumbler101 » Fri May 16, 2014 2:54 am

I was reading the documentation of this cool little synth and came across these words:
"Programmable Controllers"

Not quite sure what these are, is there anyone that knows about this synth willing to explain what this actually means? Thanks.

It likely means MIDI controllers like the modulation wheel, pitch bend wheel, breath controller, fader on control surface and so on...

Can you give us the full context instead of just those two words?

Yes, those controllers can be routed with different amounts. Probably what that means. Running a BCR2000 into a Dx21/27/100 and controlling it with sysex....Now, that is something I've wanted to try for a long time.

I never really got why you'd want to do that - it will not respond in realtime anyways...

It responds slowly, from what I've read. It also gets buffer errors. I'd just like to have the immediacy of individual knobs per parameter. At least for the pitches, and envelopes.

It will only update values after you hit a new key - just like programming it from the front panel straight away. Like every DX. Even the Jellinghaus cannot get around this.

I find the DX100 very straightforward to program from the front panel. It's all there really. On a DX7, I can understand it...

Yeah sorry, I would have done that but I was confused on the context myself as the VSE description of the synth in-terms of the programmable controllers were too vague.

Thanks to all anyway.

That's incorrect.

I have a TX7 with a custom GUI controller that alters parameters in realtime, such as LFO Depth/rate, LG's, pitch, etc.

I'm sure you can make your own realtime GUI controller using an app like Ctrlr.
Then you could either use it standalone or better... load it in your DAW and map it to a MIDI keyboard to get real knobs n sliders to adjust parameters on the fly.

I didn't think VSE's review was vague at all. It said it has NO programmable controllers.

But as I pointed out in my previous post, you can create a custom GUI controller for it, or obtain one already made.
The ones you can load in a DAW can be assigned any MIDI controller you'd like.

you can hear (and somewhat see) it for yourself.. (the vid can be adjusted to 720p if it opens up at a low res)

You can see me adjust the Pitch EG on the fly as the note is playing.
At around 0:22 I adjust an OP's Freq. while the note plays.
The Pitch EG fun begins at around 0:50 when I adjust the sustain point rate to go from 0-99. Then I adjust the Release Rate from 0-99 at around 0:56

Watch on youtube.com

I can do this for all the OP EG's too. I just only did the Pitch EG to make it short and to the point.

Funnily enough, you also quickly adjust the OP level there, which does nothing.

I may stand corrected for the main OP levels, but all the other parameters you claimed could not be adjusted while a note is active can be changed on the fly.

I may try again with a different voice.. I rushed myself making that vid.

Jabberwalky, if you need help creating a GUI to map real MIDI controllers to in a DAW for your DX, gimme a holler and I can probably show you how to build one using Ctrlr.

Yeah, I need to check all the single parameters again as well... I'm absolutely sure though that operator envelopes (not sure about the global pitch env) are not real time on a DX100 (because if they were, I'd have my real time operator level right there with the sustain). I thought it was the same on the DX7 / TX7, but I'd have to check again...

IMO, operator levels would be the most fun to alter in real time. Not possible.

Operator frequencies, yeah that works. If that wouldn't work it would really be ridiculous, no fun at all to program...
