Korg DW-8000

Korg DW-8000 Image

Take Korg's first digitally controlled analog synth hybrid (DW-6000) two steps higher and you get the more popular DW-8000. Sound is digitally generated from the DWGS (Digital Waveform Generator System) and has been doubled from 8 sampled digital waveforms to 16 simple analog to complex digital waveforms. The DW-8000 has 8 voice polyphony in two modes, or one monophonic mode with all eight voices stacked. The analog VCF resonant filter and VCA both have independent ADBSSR envelopes. Parameters can be altered in real time via a single programmable slider. There are 64 presets that can be reprogrammed by the user.

In comparison to the DW-6000, the DW-8000 expanded to 8 notes polyphony, 16 sampled waveforms, a velocity sensitive keyboard with programmable aftertouch, auto-bend, a simple arpeggiator and a digital delay unit. The Digital Delay was an astonishing goody for the time, offering up to 512ms delay, phasing, flanging, chorusing and other time effects. Both the Arpeggiator, Auto-Bend and Digital Delay make this synth an inspiring and great sounding machine to use for great 303 basslines, techno and house bass and synth sounds and more! The EX-8000 (pictured above) is a rackmount version of the DW-8000. Several 3rd-party developers offered expansion boards for the DW-8000 providing up to 1024 presets, layered sounds, keyboard splits and Sample+Hold for the LFO. Though later overshadowed by the M1, the DW-8000 has been used by Divine Masquerade, Juno Reactor, Depeche Mode, Dream Theater, Joe Zawinul, and Keith Emerson.

I'm getting ready for the day my battery dies. I have my patches recorded and verified on a WAV. I'm wondering if I can just load the patches every time I use the DW-8000 with AC power instead of replacing the battery?

I have a dw8000 that the delay does not work. by moving some of the Delay parameter, you hear a "pluck". anyone know if it is a common problem and how to solve it?

I love my DW8000. Very easy to program. (like the Poly 800) It's really great for digital bells, pads & sweeps. (& that's primarily what I use it for) When I MIDI layer the DW8000 with my Poly 800, it's truly magical. The 4 oscillators make for a really fat, thick & warm sound. When you start individually tweaking the LFO, filter, VCF/A, etc, on each of the 4 oscillators, (w/Poly 800 & DW8000 layered) you can get some very cool, "evolving" type sounds.
BTW, The Korg DW8000 goes great w/my DDD-1, both sonically & visually. They're the same color, (black) w/same color (blue) "Korg" logos. =D

nb - Me too. My dear mom (who was also a musician) bought me a Poly-800 back in '84. Eventually I wanted to upgrade to the DW8000, (I remember seeing it in Keyboard magazine & wanted it so badly!) but one of her musician/keyboardist friends talked me out of buying it. He said there was a new type of keyboard that uses "samples" (a "ROMpler") & analog type synths were on the way out. I ended up getting a Roland D-10 & a year later, a Korg M1. Last June I (finally) picked up a DW8000 in great condition, for $300. (S&H included) I'm very happy! It sounds awesome! (esp. when layered w/my Poly 800)
