Korg 707

A good entry level digital synth. It's small in size, simple in its design and offers fairly easy editing. It is a digital FM type synthesizer which makes some very thin and digital but sometimes interesting sounds. The synth engine is similar to the DS-8 without on-board effects. It isn't necessarily useful for any professional work but if you want a lo-fi cheesy digital sound from a toy-like synthesizer then give the 707 a try! It can even be strapped on like a guitar. It is used by Juan Atkins.

That's the problem with these "wiki" type information sites. Opinions can be posted on any level from the scrupulously professional to the inanely misinformed. Only the former can tell the difference. This sounds great to me. Name one other equally featured FM synth that runs on batteries and I will buy it. Until then, I would very much like to have one of these. This and a pair of portable cans and/or battery powered speaker and you've got a party on the hoof.

The sounds on this thing are very mechanical and gritty sounding. The presets [beep] , but it has a lot of potential for creating some cool sounds. It's also light to carry around and only 49 keys to play with. It's a keeper!

Despite being a bit fiddly to program and having a few limitations this is a great synth, not just entry level but very usable on a professional level!
FM synthesis is a bit complicated programming-wise but this is far easier to programme than my DX and sounds far nicer! As you would expect from an FM synth its great for fat punchy bass, strange metallic noises and sound effects but it is also fantastic for evolving pads and ambient sounds, if you see one for sale then grab yourself a bargain and take the time to play around with the programming, you'll be pleasantly surprised! ;-D

Just got 707. This is not a toy, if you learn how to use it. Not for beginners. Studio synth, for my opinion. Good for Ambient and for experimental music, bad for rock/metal music.

Cheers from finland!
