MiniKorg-700S

The MiniKorg-700S is an old and simple monophonic analog keyboard from Korg. It is a dual-oscillator synth related to Korg's first monosynth, the single oscillator MiniKorg-700. Most of the controls are located in an odd place beneath the keyboard so as to make room above the keyboard for a sheet-music stand. Some controls have bizarre names like Bender, Traveler and Expand for the auto-bend, filter and envelope, respectively.

It has three ring modulators for some strange sounds and noises. Sometimes a decent bass sound for techno music can be achieved using the MiniKorg's hi-pass and low-pass filters. The two oscillators can be de-tuned and they offer triangle, sawtooth and square waveforms. There are some strange analog effects built-in as well such as portamento, a rudimentary repeat-delay, auto-bend (bender), vibrato and Chorus and Noise waveforms.

This limited and quirky little synth is a nice collectors item but rarely seen or used anymore. It has relatively no performance controls like pitch/mod, but for ancient analog technology, this synth is quite stable and reliable. It is still quite capable of generating a very analog bass sound, thud, thump, growl or squeal. The wood side-panels and large primary colored knobs and sliders are a sure sign of Vintage status. It has been used by The Cure, ComaTeens, Kitaro, Human League, N-Trance, Vangelis, the Normal, Stevie Wonder, The Cars and Paul Hardcastle.

This was my very first synth that I bought when I was only 9 years old, and the video of this really took me back. Unlike the review on this page, the MiniKorg (mine was actually a Univox Mini-Korg K2...PRE-Korg) is capable of some really nice, fat sounds. For the life of me, even when I had it, it's controls never seemed logical and it was more of a matter of switching things on and off to make random sounds. The controls are not laid out like a typical synth (OSC-FILTER-ENV, etc.), but nonetheless, has a really fat sound.

I would have to say that the VSE rating on the 700 is oddly off the mark. This a very flexible sound crafting machine with a very full spectrum of analog power.

I have a 700 not the 700s. I bought it a couple years ago in lieu of a Roland SH-1000 These have become far too expensive in recent years. (>$1000 as of June 2012) I bought the Mini-Korg grudgingly for $200 thinking it would be a good place-holder until I found an affordable SH.

Everything I'd heard/read described the Mini-Korg as a "limited" synth with odd controls not much potential. That description doesn't do justice to what is actually a very expressive instrument. It has a gloriously vintage sound that ranges from electronic farts to gentle pan flutes. I'll be keeping this one!

I had a "700" back in the 1970s and combined it with an old continual loop echo machine. I was able to create, by utilising the loop and therefore continually overdubbing the sounds, material very similar to that which Tangerine Dream were doing at the time. wonderful piece of equipment! I wish I had that gear now.
