Korg Mono/Poly

Korg MonoPoly Image

A cool analog monophonic/polyphonic from Korg. It has 4 VCO's which can be shared in 4-voice Polyphonic mode, or linked in Unison for a versatile monophonic lead. Each VCO has its own level, tune, and waveform type control. Waveforms include triangle, sawtooth, variable pulse wave. It has a great VCF (filter) section as well as 2 envelope generators (one for the oscillators and one for the filter). There are also 2 individual LFO's which can be used to modulate the Pulse Width, envelope and Arpeggiator independently.

A very flexible and fun synth. Other cool tricks up its sleeve include chord memory and an effects mode in which oscillators have a variety of ways to be synced. The built-in arpeggiator and sequencer can run all 4 VCO's at a time or cycle through each voice per note! There's also portamento, CV/Gate, VCF and VCO mod inputs, white noise generator, and the pitch/mod wheels can be assigned to control LFO, pitch or the filter. Its sound quality is nice and very Korg. This synth is used by Hardfloor, Tangerine Dream, The Orb, 808 State, Juno Reactor, Megaton Matt Haines, Freddy Fresh, and the Chemical Brothers.

Sadly, my beloved MP4 doesn't play well anymore, something to do with that plastic thing that triggers the keyboard. Probably worn out from 'love'. But I've used it tons, including in live shows, mainly for leads. But the most fun of all was using it with a Korg SQ-10 analog sequencer. I never tried that in a live show, but it made some amazing soundscapes. If you can put those two together, and you have the patience to figure it out, you won't be disappointed.

VintageSynth sometimes copy/paste wrong information from other sites :-)

I would suggest to Vintage Synth team, to take a look in owners manual PDFs, before you write a review... Of course Mono/poly does not have a sequencer... It's a shame!! Bad information...

The description tells the MoPo features an arpeggiator AND A SEQUENCER? This is not correct. The MoPo only has an arpeggiator on board that can handle up to 4 notes. Playable as UP/DOWN/UP-DOWN. No more folks! Playing real sequences needs an external sequencer connected to the CV/GATE inputs on the backside. So edit this description please!

After the successful rebirth of the MS-20, this one or the Polysix could be prime candidates to receive a re-release. Great, powerful synthesizers that can deliver truly robust sound.

If Korg releases a modern MonoPoly, I'd buy it immediately.

I think some commenters are commenting on the sound of the Software version of Mono/Poly which was made back in 2007. The sound is not comparable. Not even close. The software sounds thin and weedy with none of the same character as the original.

Don't get me wrong, I love software and it's come a long way since 2007 but the sound of a real mono/poly is so different.
