Korg Mono/Poly

Korg MonoPoly Image

A cool analog monophonic/polyphonic from Korg. It has 4 VCO's which can be shared in 4-voice Polyphonic mode, or linked in Unison for a versatile monophonic lead. Each VCO has its own level, tune, and waveform type control. Waveforms include triangle, sawtooth, variable pulse wave. It has a great VCF (filter) section as well as 2 envelope generators (one for the oscillators and one for the filter). There are also 2 individual LFO's which can be used to modulate the Pulse Width, envelope and Arpeggiator independently.

A very flexible and fun synth. Other cool tricks up its sleeve include chord memory and an effects mode in which oscillators have a variety of ways to be synced. The built-in arpeggiator and sequencer can run all 4 VCO's at a time or cycle through each voice per note! There's also portamento, CV/Gate, VCF and VCO mod inputs, white noise generator, and the pitch/mod wheels can be assigned to control LFO, pitch or the filter. Its sound quality is nice and very Korg. This synth is used by Hardfloor, Tangerine Dream, The Orb, 808 State, Juno Reactor, Megaton Matt Haines, Freddy Fresh, and the Chemical Brothers.

A raw sound, a peculiar beast. Used as a 4 VCO mono, it doesn't mananage the fat, creamy sound you would expect, at all. To my ears it always sounds raw and unpolished, not particularly nice for bass, nor for leads. It's sweet for Tangerine Dream-ian sequence runs with the arpeggiator, some metalic plinks and plonks here and there, and maybe the obvious fun of playing it 4-voice poly with some wonky detuning. It looks very nice, and it's a synthesist's synth for sure, but it just never floated my boat.

Wow, 20$, that's amazing! I picked mine up in the fall for 700$ and thought I got a great deal. Now one of my favorite synths, such an inspiring design.

I had one of these in the 80s. Bought it brand new on HP when I was 17 (my Dad had to sign the forms) sooooooooooo regret getting rid of it a few years later when getting money for going on the piss was more important. Someone recently said to me "Never sell gear - you'll regret it one day" -- too true. Remember having a lot of fun with it.

Kind of funny, but I used to be a real Roland-believer. Still is, but to a certain degree. After having bought several of the old Korg's, I must admit, that they really did a good job, back in the beginning of the 80's. The Mono/Poly is by far one of the most inspiring synth's I've ever played (I have had about 50). Setting the filters and knobs just right and turning the arpeggiator on, you can bring the sound to another level, making the synth just go on and on by it's own. Jam on you own! Wow! Thanx, Korg-guys!
