Poly-800

During the time of the Roland Juno series in the mid-80's, Korg offered the Poly-800. Comparable to the Juno and in many ways better, the Poly-800 is an 8 voice polyphonic analog synthesizer with 64 memory patches and up to 50 editable parameters! There's also a stereo chorus effect, a sequencer, and a weird joystick used to adjust pitch, modulation and the filter. There is a double mode in which the oscillators double up making 4 fat voices of polyphony - fun for trance and techno.

Then in 1984 came the Poly-800 mkII (pictured above) which added digital delay effects. The rackmount EX-800 version (pictured below) has a built-in 256-step polyphonic sequencer. Poly-800s have been used by Orbital, Depeche Mode, Sneaker Pimps, Vangelis, Geoff Downes, Yesterdays and Jimi Tenor.

Below is the more rare Reverse Keys version of the Poly-800. Its specifications and features are the same as the original. Only the key colors are reversed.

Have borrowed my friend's reverse coloured Poly 800 (he's got another one with a Moog Slayer kit on it) and I've got some 80's synth-pop style sounds, some timid "wowwy" basses and some thin pads out of it but haven't managed a nice fat crunchy analogue sound which's the best thing about vintage synths. To be honest I gave up trying to get a sound I liked because the number pad editing of parameters is endlessly frustrating. To change something like the filter cutoff you have to scroll through from 0 to 99 or press a series of mode buttons to change every parameter. Forget about taking it to a band jam expecting to be able to come up with some new sound as you go. It can take hours just to set up a program how you want it. Put aside a couple of days to set up a whole bank of original sounds. There's no triangle wave or reverse sawtooth to mix in either which is annoying. There is no comparison to the juno: I've never heard a juno sound bad. I'm yet to make the poly-800 sound good.

Yuuk the black key version. I had the white key version for a short while but sold it as it only had 1 filter! Nice though as it was part of the first synths from korg that were based on PCM synthesesis. It cold do nice strings and had a versatile delay effect.

The Poly 800 is great for the price.
Got mine for 100 quid.
This would be a great starter synth for anybody, but if your into the really fat sounds of the JX, Juno or Jupiter series than there is no hope of it sounding as good.
