Alesis MMT-8

Alesis MMT-8 Image

A standard and simple MIDI sequencer that is still used today by some of the biggest names in electronic music because of its simplicity, durability and reliability. It's simply a pattern and song based sequencer with 8 separate tracks. Each of these tracks can carry 16 channels of Midi info which makes this more like 128 tracks. These tracks can be muted during playback giving you a lot of performance control for a live situation. It's also a nice way for creating various breakdowns and builds in your music. Patterns can also be switched on the fly for true performance ability!

With external click inputs and Midi, the MMT-8 can be used to integrate your older drum machines or sequencers with Midi systems! Still you may not find much use for it in a studio, however, because using a computer to sequence these days is much faster and flexible. Similar to Roland's new grooveline, the MC-303, MC-505 and JX-305; the MMT-8 offers a fun method of performing sequences in a live situation that is ideal for DJs and musicians. It is used live by Orbital, Moby, Jimmy Edgar, Higher Intelligence Agency, Autechre, and Carl Craig.

Just brought mine out from storage. I'm debating selling it but started playing around with it again and I dunno ... this thing is super easy to use, I remember now. No boot up time, open the program, set up a track and port, *idea goes poof*. But, get an idea, turn on the MMT-8 and start recording. In 10 seconds.

Yeah it's gonna take some $$ to make me part with the MMT-8 with a light heart. Maybe I'll ask $500 for it. lol

I rather get lost in my music than software on a computer screen, this sequencer makes me focus on music rather than on menus and sub-menus. The mmt8 is my conductor and the synths are the players in the orchestra. I know I can have more than 8 tracks, but just having 8 buttons for tracks makes me utilize tracks more efficiently. I love muting tracks, and having different quantasation on each instrument. After a song is completed, then I can transfer all MIDI info to Ableton Live and record the instruments separately. If it weren't for the glitchy buttons -mmt8 would be perfect

I've been writing songs on this thing for almost 25years and it is the first and easiest to use period. Check our album on souljazzoffortune.com (all done on MMT-8) I don't like doing everything with a MOUSE! This has dedicated buttons and sliders so it is Fast! Run it through a Midi Patchbay and you can control many as many units as the bay has plugs with not time delay. Alesis used to replace button contacts and batteries but I don't know if they even remember that they made these since they changed hands. Alesis was the best and on the top of their game then.

Boris,

easy alternative to overdub is to write to a new track than merge / dump.
