Waldorf PPG Wave 2.V

Waldorf PPG 2.V Image

The amazing and classic PPG Wave 2.V synthesizer is now available as a VST Instrument for your PC or Mac VST system! It looks, functions and sounds just like the original Wave 2.3 but with all the power, control and flexibility of a VST environment, such as Cubase VST! The outputs appear directly in the VST mixer, so effects and EQ can be applied like any other audio channel. MIDI tracks are routed directly to the input of the PPG Wave 2.V and all parameters are real-time controllable! Velocity and Aftertouch sensitivity is also available.

The Wave's most interesting feature was its ability to sweep through 64 waveforms in what PPG called a wavetable. Over 2000 waveforms are available within the Wave's 32 internal wavetables for an incredibly broad range of sounds, from animated pads and textures to bass, leads and effects. Polyphony now depends solely on the amount CPU power you have. You can layer up to 8 PPG Wave 2.Vs, each with 8 times multitimbral capability, allowing for almost limitless sounds. A new graphical page offers easy editing of envelopes, generators and the low-pass filter. A must have for any Cubase VST user!

I view this VSTi as its own instrument and offers very narrow insight to the PPG world. I've owned the 2.2 and 2.3 since 1983 and they've both been a primary staple in my studio and sound and one I can't do without. This plugin is another story all together. If you're looking to understand a general concept of the PPG structure this may help but again is very different. The 6809 hardware processor and operating language of a real PPG is something you could never understand in the plugin world and offers a sound I've never heard from a computer plugin.

gridsleep, when it comes down to recreations of digital synths it doesn't matter if you recreate the components. It's just a program running on an cpu just the same as it does on your computer so the PPG or the Korg Wavestation are just that same software but then made compatible with your pc or mac. And if we are talking about wich brand is best for recreating analog hardware through software it's Yamaha by far (they where commissioned to do software emulations of Neve designs)

I have had this VST for about 4 or 5 years now. It is very old in VST years!
I love the odd squelchy sound of it. Modulating a wavetable with a wavetable for an lfo? sure! If you want a hard digital sound, harder than DX7 or CZ1000, this is it!
The filter? Meh, I never use it. I like the naked wavetables.

I recently purchased the 3.V version of this software and can't do without it. Sold my Blofeld in favor of this software. It and FM8 have become staple software in my works. The best things about it, besides the sound, is that you can setup how close to an actual PPG (2.2 or 2.3) that you want the sound. Another underrated softsynth and excellent piece of work by Waldorf.

Lamster, you have obviously never tried the Korg Legacy Collection. Korg created exact models of the synthesizers right down to the functioning and interaction of the each component on the circuit boards, so that the virtual synthesizer functions exactly like the real one, even down the the quirks and limitations. If I run up the keys rapidly on the virtual MS-20, I can hear the clicks and tiny squeaks of "oscillators" unable to keep up with the pace. And yet impossibilities are provided, such as using a monosynth with a setting of 128 voices simultaneously. And they all sound delicious!
