Elektron SidStation

SidStation Image

"The SidStation is a MIDI-controlled synthesizer with real-time controllers. The heart of this synthesizer is the sound generating chip from the classic home computer Commodore 64. This sound chip, named SID (Sound Interface Device) was developed in the early eighties by Bob Yannes at MOS technology."

"The rediscovery of the SID-sound will be a pleasant surprise for many sound explorers that are looking for something more exiting than the current crop of analog imitating 'virtual' synthesizers."

Features of the SidStation synth module include a rotary wheel for easy data entry, an alpha-numeric 2x16 LCD display with back-lighting, audio input and output, 3 syncable oscillators with traditional (triangle, sawtooth, pulse) waveforms, nice resonant filters, arpeggiators, effects and ring modulation. The numeric keyboard and large knobs offer a unique form of hands-on desktop dance / techno music production for the 90's and beyond!

Cant believe there are so few comments! SIDSTATION is so much more than the sum of its VERY FEW parts! i think the chip itself is the only machine that has a soul. its maker doesnt even know how cool it is. -in interviews he always says stuff like "i wish i could of..." and "it doesnt sound good" (!!!) its a freak of non-nature! Elektron vindicated it and liberated it in simple elegance! its just one of those things that make life special. NOW,, if only they did what Yannes originally intended 100%, and that would have been, imo, to put it in a 37 key keyboard!!! (i LOVE a mini synth. Nord Modular is also a favorite) In closing, its NOT for everyone, very one-sided stylistically.

There is not a cooler instrument. This is a C64 in a can - with knobs. If you have enough expertise to build your own, then the price will seem outrageous - it is... Elektron are total jerks for contributing to price inflation of the SID chips. But, it is a very sweet machine.

I have a large colection of retro gear but this is by far the most worthwile. My Atari synthcart has been pushed to the side cause of this little ball of joy.
