Novation Super Bass Station

Super Bass Station Image

The Super Bass Station takes its classic predecessor and adds to it an impressive set of features. These include separate ADSR's for the filter and envelope. The key follow effect was added to filter section. An SH-type sub oscillator and noise generator have been added to the oscillator sections. An ultra-cool ring mod effect and a true mixer section for balancing all these sound sources together have also been added.

Plenty of updates have been made to the effects section for the ultimate in monophonic bass synthesis. The Super Bass Station now features distortion, stereo outs, panning, stereo chorus, two LFO's, an arpeggiator with clock out and doubled memory to 200 patches (50 preset, 150 user). A new slide function creates much more realistic 303 patterns.

An amazing upgrade that makes this synth a truly flexible and MIDI aware Roland/Moog bass synth emulator...heck it's way more than that, it's a Novation Super Bass Station! It's used by William Ørbit, Biosphere, Massive Attack, Orbital, Josh Wink, Out of Logic, Nine Inch Nails and Underworld.

I wasn't prepared to pay the £200+ they go for nowadays so I had a very, very long wait before one appeared which I could afford. The extras over the original make this an extremely useful, and diverse, module, capable of fulfilling a huge variety of roles, from sub bass to screaming leads and special FX.

The Super Bass Station can sit nicely amongst my other gear BUT I can make it stand out if I want it to. The analog chorus thickens the sound beautifully and the filter reminds me of early Roland synths.

It is so good that I bought another - they are superb value, even at £200+.

I didn't expect that much of this cheap little analog synth but I really love it.
I'm glad I didn't go for the normal Bass Station (Keys/Rack) because the extra features really are a big upgrade for this device and prices are pretty much the same for these devices over here (around €200).
It sounds analog, the analog circuit has some very subtile crosstalk on my device so it doesn't sound sterile.
The only downside is that the knobs are to close together, a little touch to another knob can change the sound drasticaly if the value on that knob is very different than the actual value.

Well, to answer some things: 1. it's analogue osc's. maybe DCOs, not sure, but definitly analoeg! to be proofed by CV/Gate outs!

2. someone gave a down rate compared with Juno 106 or SH 101: no way. Superbass is way above the reso-filter of Juno. Juno is polyphon, so its bass might sound different, but certainly NOT as weird as the Superbass. when getting a piece offered: BUY!
3: Differences between Bass + Superbass are quite significant (LFOs, Arp etc. ...), whenever a chance for Superbass, get it!

Very cheap to buy but great. Does have a digital quality to it, along the lines of Mopho or Prophet so maybe digital DCO's? Not sure and not really bothered. Like them it's also possible to dial in fat sounds. See one at a good price buy it 'cause if you don't like it youu'll sell it easy.
