Oberheim Matrix 1000

Oberheim Matrix-1000 Image

The analog Matrix 1000 is essentially 1,000 Matrix 6 patches in a single-space compact rackmount MIDI module. It has the same synth architecture as the Matrix 6. Each of its 6 voices have two DCO's (digitally controlled analog oscillator), a low pass filter, 2 VCA's, 3 envelope gens, 2 LFO's, and 2 ramp gens. The sounds are plentiful and good enough, however sounds can only be edited via MIDI, so you'll need an external MIDI editor (such as MOTU's Unisyn) or Access' Matrix Programmer to edit parameters. You can also load sounds from the Matrix 6 via SysEx or software.

The Matrix 1000 provides an excellent source of pads, textures and ambient sounds. It has 195 "keyboard" sounds, 118 "strings", 130 "woodwinds & perc", 239 "synthesizer", 119 "bass", 74 "lead" and 125 "effects". For the price, there is no better way to find genuine analog Oberheim Matrix sounds in a compact and very in-expensive rack module that is loaded with more sounds than you'll ever need! The older versions of the Matrix 1000 have a black front-panel. The newer models in the '90's have a cream colored face-plate. It has been used by Apollo 440, Juno Reactor, Moby, Cirrus, Fatboy Slim, Laurent Garnier, ATB, Depeche Mode, Future Sound of London, Pet Shop Boys, and Faithless.

DCOs are analog sound sources controlled by digitally controlled control voltages. What do you mean they can't be both? The sound is analog (there is no DA concversion in the audio path) but pitch etc is controlled by digital means. It's very simple.

Problem with this statement. "Each of its 6 voices have two DCO's (digitally controlled analog oscillator)" Er no, so wrong. DCO = digitally controlled oscillator; As apposited to analogue, can't can't be both... DCO's have been used in Juno 106, alpha juno 1/2, novation bass station and the EDP wasp to name but a few classics so nothing to be ashamed of!

more a programmer than a editor/librarian, but really good and free and for mac.
it has a great random feature as well, which will turn your matrix into alien sounds right away :)

I can't say enough about this synth. Got one on Ebay for 400$ 8/2010. I love 75% of the 800 patches. It is DARK in tone though, so I don't know about centering all production around it. In an abstract way It has a 'spooky' feel to the sound. The bass is not it's strongest point. Even in mono, each hit feels a little loose. The in bank drum set is pretty rad. You can def. get some classic analog 'Bboy' sounds if you want to layer sequences. I got the Obieeditor for mac, and it works fine, though the interface is dense for those new to sound shaping.... but with 800 patches you can also mono, you can probably find something right for your track.
I love this thing.

I have a Matrix 6 & bought a cassette data tape (Oberheim original) w/ 1000 patches to upload. The M6 can only hold 100 sounds at a time. Are these the same patches as an M1000? They're incredible, for sure.
