Roland TR-707 Rhythm Composer

Roland TR-707 Image

A very underrated drum machine! It resembles the popular TR-909, and better yet, its hi-hat, cymbals, and clap sound almost identical to the TR-909! The TR-707 is a great source for cheap 909 samples. It has some other cool features too such as its Matrix display which clearly maps out your pattern for you in an easy to read display panel. It also features both MIDI in/out and DIN sync control - the best of both worlds. Why this unit even has individual outputs for each of its drum tones!

For programming, it features a shuffle and flam effect and its programming abilities are very impressive. But it does have its limitations, the only adjustment you can make to each drum tone is volume. And all of its other drum tones are boring (especially ride, kick and snare). It's used by Aphex Twin, Laurent Garnier, Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, Freddy Fresh, Phil Collins, Marshall Jefferson and Plastikman.

I miss my TR-707. I let a friend borrow it back in '92 and someone broke in his house and the only thing stolen out of his house was my beloved 707. :-/
Go figure...

The 707 has been a favourite of mine since the early nineties.

I originally picked-it up in order to sync my Juno's arpeggiator with my MIDI gear. Then I learned how to program it properly and now its the centerpiece of my little studio. I currently use it as my master clock sync'ing a JUNO-6 arpeggio, an MSQ-700 sequencer, and Cakewalk 3.0 via MIDI. It also triggers sounds on a modified Synsonics Drums & a Pearl DRX-1 which supplements the anemic-sounding kick. I even have a Monotron and Bliptronic 5000 hooked up to it.

...Not bad for $100 beat box!

@ john graziano: this is a HUGE favorite of mine :D a definite keeper...lower established retail value than the 808 and great capabilities, since you said it needs a tempo knob, and you found it in the trash can I can help you analyze the extent of the damage/find replacement part(s) and repair it...for free, seriously.
