Roland D-20

Roland D-20 Image

The D-20 makes a great budget or alternative D-50. It's more closely related to the D-10 and D-110 synthesizers but adds an 8-voice sequencer with a rhythm track. The D-20 is a digital synth that employs linear arithmetic synthesis (LAS). It's a confusing synthesis / editing method composed of tones, partials and timbres. Basically it all boils down to tricky programming which, if you know what your doing, can have interesting and unique results. Reverb effects and internal / external memory storage are also available on the D-20. Definitely worth a listen.

Just bought a D20 out of curiosity and am selling it ASAP. Let's talk D50 first. It's the keyboard you want because it was late 80's/ 90's music history until you realize that although it sounds huge/analog it bores after awhile with its cheesy low bit samples. There are absolutely no convincing samples on the D50. It can't even produce a decent useable electric piano, but it is famous mostly for its horns and atmospheric sounds. The D20 is a way trimmed down D50. Roland egged the masses with the D10/20/110 products and no demanding musician would keep one. It's cutesy though

Upon purchasing this synthesizer 2 years ago. I was not shocked at what the comments regarding the Roland D-20 comprised of. I just thought I'd gotten what I paid for. Now though I realize how deep this thing really is. Yes the two oscillators in the thing can't be edited beyond the killer acidic filter, the ADSR envelope, or the weak singular wave LFO, but the combination of adding in ROM samples and analog-like oscillators is unique. The user interface on the D-20 is surprisingly user friendly if you give it a chance. If you've used the MC-505 from ten years later, they have a similar UI.

An update, i bought patches for D20 from the site and they are really good. There are some very nice sounds there, if they would provide those sounds at the time that D20 was on the market it would be really a hit!
