Roland MC-505 Groovebox

Roland MC-505 Image

An all in one techno music production studio, this machine has it all. A massive collection of professional and coveted electronic synth and drum sounds, effects, built-in real-time VCF and envelope knobs for tweaking, a sequencer/arranger, and many other great additions. This is the successor to the MC-303 and is now much more advanced. Its sounds will be familiar to any techno-head.

The LFO and resonant filters allow quick and easy sound manipulation. The new D-Beam allows you to randomly tweak your sounds by passing your hand over an infrared beam! It has a great sequencer for building your songs (with groove quantizing and part level faders for mixing) as well as many idea catchers like the phrase sampler and arpeggiator.

This is an all-in-one music machine that's great for DJ's or anybody else who wants to create slamming dance tracks. Designed as a stand alone machine, they do not work quite as well when incorporated into a multi-synth keyboard rig. It's perfect for beginners and advanced users, but offers the most possibility to those who will use it exclusively. By the way, in comparison to the MC-303, this is far better especially in the quality and quantity of sounds! It is used by Beck, Chicks On Speed, Peaches, Freddy Fresh, and Cibo Matto.

This was my first synth/sequencer. I haven't experienced any of the OS issues that others have mentioned on here. This thing is easy to learn imho and also great fun to perform with. I love the TR style step sequencing. Also, the mixing section is brilliant with all of the part mutes, even for individual drum sounds. There are a lot of cool tricks that you can do for performance, like sweeping the pitch button on the drums all the way up and making them reverse, or using the arpeggiator to do kick or snare rolls. The presets are really lame, but you can make awesome sounds on your own!

"they do not work quite as well when incorporated into a multi-synth keyboard rig."

The statement in this review is very inaccurate. You can set up any of the 8 parts to send MIDI out and use the extra outputs jacks as trigger signals for non-MIDI vintage gear, so it works wonderfully in a multi-synth rig. It all depends on how you wire things up. Even if you just use this as a drum machine, it's a great to get those vintage Roland drum machine sounds without the hassle of spending hundreds on the real deal, then needing sync converters or a sampler to work them into your music.

My first synth! Don't think I'd ever sell it really. The interface isn't the easiest thing to get your head around in terms of in depth programming, but if you have time to sit with the manual and figure everything out there's a lot to do with this machine. Granted the presets are mostly cheesy as hell but it is possible to coax a great many great sounds out of this.
