Roland MC-505 Groovebox

Roland MC-505 Image

An all in one techno music production studio, this machine has it all. A massive collection of professional and coveted electronic synth and drum sounds, effects, built-in real-time VCF and envelope knobs for tweaking, a sequencer/arranger, and many other great additions. This is the successor to the MC-303 and is now much more advanced. Its sounds will be familiar to any techno-head.

The LFO and resonant filters allow quick and easy sound manipulation. The new D-Beam allows you to randomly tweak your sounds by passing your hand over an infrared beam! It has a great sequencer for building your songs (with groove quantizing and part level faders for mixing) as well as many idea catchers like the phrase sampler and arpeggiator.

This is an all-in-one music machine that's great for DJ's or anybody else who wants to create slamming dance tracks. Designed as a stand alone machine, they do not work quite as well when incorporated into a multi-synth keyboard rig. It's perfect for beginners and advanced users, but offers the most possibility to those who will use it exclusively. By the way, in comparison to the MC-303, this is far better especially in the quality and quantity of sounds! It is used by Beck, Chicks On Speed, Peaches, Freddy Fresh, and Cibo Matto.

RIP, MC-505

After MC-303 was a complete disapointment to me I ordered a new version from them and gave them list of improvements. So after a few months they send me MC-505 for testing. Therefore I had one of the very first ones made in use and I found this machine ok for Hip-Hop, but not techno.

The tempo floats way too much and the system gets stiffy if you use a lot of the effects. The filter of this machine is a nightmare. Í tryed to find a way to go around these problems and requested firmware and sound update. " That came quite late. " So after throwing 2 gigs with this, I sold the machine foward to my friend who is doing hip hop. This product is not made for techno.

Don't expect this box to fulfill your dreams of an all in one drum, lead, bass perfectionist. It has bugs, tiny, but disturbing, and the lack of processing power limits its live potential. eg banks update slowly, sometimes menus don't show on screen, rhythm does not update quick enough. Click on Rec and a whole slew of restrictions abound.

But for live, hitch this up with a dedicated drum machine, and you've got a workable variable setup. The thing I would want fixed is for it to accommodate enough power to let parts run on hold and hold it even when switching parts to edit resonance etc. Version 1.8 firmware anyone?

yeah no kidding this dosent sound analog, i mean analog dosent sound like this either. i am really pleased that people dont get this machine beacause the preset patterns arent so good or the sounds do not sound exactly like a this or a that.
this machine is really a classic and well it does have its own sound.
it get get pretty deep if you are inclined to spending some time with the programming of your own sounds then you can reallly get a lot out of this old groovebox.
used this on many albums past present and future. i will not get rid of it and it by far is a great future collectible.
