Roland XV-5050

Roland XV-5050 Image

Roland's XV-5050 is a 64-voice synthesizer packed with their XV-5080 synth engine in a small 1-unit rack-module. It features four stereo tones per patch, expressive Matrix Control and over a thousand inspiring presets-expandable via high-quality SRX-Series Wave Expansion Boards. There are also three independent effects processors, digital outputs, plus a USB port for easy connection to computers.

Front panel controls are at a minimum, as you might expect from such a small rack module. You can select and edit patches from the front, but this module is really at home in a computer/MIDI studio set-up. You get all of Roland's XV-5080 sounds plus a selection of sounds from the newer Fantom-X series of synthesizers. The three effects processors offer 24-bit reverb and chorus, plus 90 multi-effects including COSM Guitar Amp Modeling.

For connectivity, the XV-5050 has superb features. They include four analog outputs, 24-bit D/A converters and S/PDIF digital outputs, a front panel USB port for simplified MIDI connections with a Mac or PC (drivers included on a CD-ROM), and two SRX expansion ports for adding more sounds (up to 192 MB total) from the SRX-Series Wave Expansion Boards. Each expansion contains 64MB of new sounds and patches, and can be user-installed in seconds.

Cost effective, simple, compact, computer savvy, superior sound quality. These are the means by which the XV-5050 was designed to provide users with the sounds of Roland's flagship XV-series sound engine.

No need to buy a phantom or even a JV-1080 if you have this unit - Unknown or Unreported by xv-5050 users is that the first 300 patches are the exact same as the JV-1080 (Honest to goodness truth, because they have the same exact names, no joke) - I have a 1080, but will keep it since if have some SR-JV expansion boards in it (plus I got my 1080 in prestine conditon for $150) - My xv-5050 is pretty Good it does make all the 1080 patches sound cleaner it overall it is a good module - Poly is good, usb is a great feature, cause it can act very DAW'ish - I got mine for $90 off ebay I fixed it!

Got one at Ebay. Together with SRX-07 an absolute sound monster. XV sounds better than JV (you'll meet lots of well known waveforms), pianos are brighter, strings are more fat and there are better and more effects. For gigs you can't use the volume pedal in performance mode, which is realy nasty.

I sold it! And bought 5080! :)
Last month (without 5050) i doesn't wrote any tracks. Without it's acoustic sounds i can't do anything, even on electronic tracks.

Look at my comment on 5080 page.

OK, this is a small brother of (some day) flagship 5080.
Editing is not fast (tiny lcd), but possible (cause of thought-out OS). Also i used software editor (MIDI-quest), so i see all patch/perfomance parameters on a PC screen. And i can automate it in DAW!
With SRX-06 and SRX-07 it covers all my need of acoustic instruments.
No problems with voice restriction - even if this is the only your synth.
Maybe someday i sell it and buy 5080, but not fantoms (!) respectively.
